Well here it is. My after action report on my 2 amazing days on track at the Glen.
I won't bother blogging the whole thing here, as I just spent an obscene amount of time making a full-scale blog elsewhere. If you're interested in reading what I did, from getting the car ready, to what the event was like, to reporting on the track action, please take a gander at my blog, "Hunting Apexes".
Brew a pot of coffee and settle down for a long read. Or just watch the videos there. All the on-track vids and info are on the most recent blog posts. The earlier, pre-event posts are at the bottom.
Here's a vid of one lap, the only one with captions (lap 3). In the interest of file size, I broke up the 25 minute session into 1 vid per lap (6 laps shown - I excluded the Out- and In- laps).
This embedded video is tiny, unfortunately. [... more]
Well, it seems my diligence as a new flagger has unexpected rewards.
I just got invited to participate in a 2-day driving school that a regional BMW club is hosting later this month. One of our flaggers is connected with the club and apparently is tasked with finding a recruit from within the track organization. Turns out, my tired old Neon doesn't look quite so tired, as it caught his eye and prompted him to speak with me. After a couple minutes of chit chat, I was offered the chance to start driving for real (not racing, mind you... high performance driving... which, in my book, is shorthand for *pre*-racing school. ;)
Anyway. I have some priority work to do on my car in the next couple weeks just to get it to pass safety tech. I won't be pushing this 10 year old car very hard, but I'd like to know it's safe and will get me home again after 2 days of track time.

Well, I applied, and I've been accepted. I'm officially going to be a first time flag worker at Watkins Glen this season. Just got the OK this morning. New member meeting is this Saturday. Training to follow suit.
Going to be sweet to see most every kind of racing available... for free... from some of the best seats in the house.
One tiny step closer to the real deal for me.
Finally! =)
This started out in the Post-Race for Tuesday's Welcome to G3, but it turned into a bitter rant (against myself, not any other drivers... was a good event in that regard). Figured I wouldn't clog up that forum with my whining... again.
Welcome division was supposed to be 'easier.' I guess I'm just going backwards.
I was really surprised by the number of Vipers. I assumed (based on nothing more than baseless gut feeling) that the Porsche would be the popular car (it's frequently dominant elsewhere I think). So I figured I'd be taking an unpopular car and wouldn't have to bother with keeping up with fast kids. Boy, was I wrong. And unbelievably wrong about how fast I thought I was (comparing offline practice to what I saw online... yikes!). I couldn't even race with the other Vipers!
Boooring. I'm not real excited about driving by myself for a whole race. I can run lap [... more]
