Product Priority Upgrade - which would you do first??
07:52 PM on Nov 05, 2007

Here is something I believe we all think about, the question of "what next", what if you have some additional money to spend on an upgrade to enhance your SIM racing experience, what would you spend it on first?

Not on these thats for sure Now I have seen everything!!!

Ok, good question (yeah)?

Now, how much money do we have to spend, lets put a dollar amount of oh...$250.00 to $350.00, think of how you improved your driving experience spending somewhere close to that amount. What would you be inclined to spend it on first?

For now, to start this and to keep the answers in a more focused perspective lets leave out the higher platform systems, meaning the folks who already reached the ECCI/CST/ Mega processor dual core 8800gtx million megabyte rigs(we all want that)but for the drivers out there who might think along the lines of these questions;
1 -should I upgrade my video card for more dynamics in visual realism?
2-Do I just add great pedals(if in price range) to my blah blah steering wheel or go from a MOMO/DFP to a G25
3- Is a 24' widescreen better then a 19" for a more lifelike feel?
4 - Should I get a newer MB and Processor?

There are many variables related here I know, but maybe we can help determine what takes SIM racing to the next level of realism and enjoyment. What products come first, is it video, processor speed, screen size, steering wheel, pedals or new desk that doesn't fall apart when the steering wheel shakes after crashing into the back of Bob Fay in the TPSCC events. LOL

No question for me, the answer is pedals.

Agreed. Pedals for sure. All the other stuff doesnt necessarily "help" - it is just eye candy, but pedals can definately help. Both in terms of enjoyment and lap time consistency. A nice set of pedals was my first major "upgrade". Then it was the wheel, then the processor, then more memory, then a better monitor, then the video card, then the second monitor, then the cockpit, then the newer processor, then the newer video card, then the new and improved cockpit, then the battery backup, then the bigger monitor. It never stops!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! LOL!!!

Shane, those are SimSocks! I thought the general idea for them was good, but not worth the $30. I race in my socks (no feel at all for pedals with shoes). The only problem is the pedal edges bug me (sensitive feet? LoL) so my poor-mans solution was a $9 pair of those low cut sport socks with reinforced sole/heel. I put them on over my regular socks which give just the right amount of cushion to keep my feet nice and comfy during those long 2+ hour races.

Oh, back to the subject...

GRAPHICS CARD!!!

All that other cool stuff is useless if you don't have butter smooth FPS (at max settings of course!)

I think I have enough saved up (change bottle - LoL) for one of the two must halves - G-25 wheel to replace my very old and worn Momo Black wheel or a brand new 8800-GTS (or maybe the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT)

Well I am fiends with a Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Team Principle who uses his Sparko racing shoes when it comes to Sim racing, similair i think to these racing socks with reinforced heels or whatever. I also either just race with normal socks on, or not, but sweating causes feet slippage.
I dont think pedals make the difference .. perhaps i still need to see what the G25 pedals do.

In my honest opinion it is the eye candy and the system performance. I am still busy putting together my new ultimate rig, with the 24'' bla bla . But i still manage to get the job done with my trusty old single core 2ghz cpu, 1 gig of ram, and an older fully abused 7800GT 256meg graphic card and my Driving force pro, thats about to break any day now. all running my game beautifully on LOW settings on 1024x768 res, just about making a constant 60fps..

Cant wait for the day I experience this Sim in all its divine glory!

Pedals. I bought a set of the CST pedals about 6 months ago and noticed an instant difference in consistency.

I used the clutch and heal-toe technique on downshifts for most of my sim races during that time also. This week I am borrowing by brothers truck, it's a standard tranny. Without realizing it at first I was blipping the throttle on down shifts like it was second nature. I have had to make a conscious effort to not do it.

So I would say the pedals have improved my sim racing experience the most. I did upgrade to a larger monitor and better computer last month but to be honest the difference was not that big from my old setup.

Hey Gregg, if we are talking about you, then I say you need a new video card 1st. WTF are new pedals gonna do for you if you can't run the sims????? You,ve been crying about your PC's video sucking and locking up...get an 8800GTS and take it from there.

#3 really depends on getting #1 first due to the resolution increase.

Also, dollars spent on your graphics card will always benefit you more than dollars spent on a CPU. Even more so with the much higher resolution offered buy #3. Obviously, don't take my word on that. Anandtech and other sites will support that point. Especially with the software you want to run.
