Skins and a very buggy Race07 do not mix
05:59 AM on Jan 30, 2008

Yeah I'm a little pissed off having just DNF'd the E30 Vara race. But I had practiced earlier in the day online, nobody had joined so it was just myself for about 40 mins - 1 hour. All was good, no issues, no hickups, peachy.

So come time to actually do the qual and practice and I get CTD's (crash to desktop) with a nice C++ runtime error. I'm WTF? So I go back in and some folks look like they're in a chevy, but this is E30 only??

By my 3rd CTD someone mentioned something about a skins file for Race07. So the bulb goes on, hmmm...it was fine with just myself online (no other cars with skins joined) and then NOT fine when folks with skins start joining come practice/qual/race. So I head off to download the Race07 skins file, install to the directory per example, and all "appears" to be good as I get back in with 1 min to spare.

Put in a good qual lap, got pole and go to the grid and another chevy pops up 1/2 in my car and 1/2 out my car?? So I'm trying to figure WTF is going on, by this time the race starts and the car 1/2 inside my car cause contract right of the bat (duh), 2nd place takes off and I'm sitting there scratching my head.

I'm pissed because pole is so very important for that track and to find out:

1. Skins file IS required if I don't want CTDs
2. Two cars starting on the same grid spot is not fun
3. Blue flags with no cars behind me
4. Cars that randomly pop up in front of me (by server ping is 30ms)

I have nothing against skins, in fact, I think they're great! But if they're gonna cause problems in an already very fragile Race07, then it might be good to test them out a little more before making them available. I know everyone wasn't having this problem, but I know I wasn't alone either.

Sorry to Ryan A. for the contact, you ran a little wide and I stuffed the hole and I was definitely is "Agressive" mode and just pissed off at the game/skin issues and having another car starting in my grid spot.

Great job Podium, thanks for bringing it home for the Team Mark.

I understand your frustrations. That was my best effort and to just have it thrown away with a computer problem on the last lap was sickening. Wanted soooooo much to finish. Congradulations on pole! I'm sure you would have taken the checkered home.

I feel for you man; I was pretty annoyed as well. Had practiced a good bit and was looking forward to a good race.

I didn't have the skins pack, but didn't get any CTDs. What I got was massive stuttering and paging to disc; tabbed out and the damned game was using close to a gig of RAM, plus getting the chevys, error msgs and blue flags in practice with no cars around. Bailed, rebooted and re-entered, but it didn't help. No way that was going to work in traffic so I left before the start.

Was on the R2P server for a bit with Mark and Charlie last night and it was fine, so it's got to be the skins bug (which SimBin are aware of). Game works fine in all respects otherwise, but will lock my PC up solid if I even try to load a replay from tonight's Vara race.

You're right Steve, there were no problems with Charlie, you and I. But before you came on there was. I seen a blue chevy, and guys were gettin' droped.

Charlie/Steve, good to see I was not the only one having problems. I probably should have just exited also, but it's hard to leave when on pole.

Shane, AiM MyChron4 GPS data from my Shifter Kart. Race Studio software will plot the data to a Google Earth file and viola, overlay on the real Infineon Kart track -- off in a few spots, but pretty close. Curbing thru that chicane is a rib cracker (even with a rib protector) -- off by a few inches and you can easily bruise or crack a rib.

Great job by the way Mark, sorry for my incidents but it was REALLY hard to drive the way the game was frame jumping - one milli-sec I'm entering my brake zone the next I'm at the end of it -- wait what happened to all the frames in between!! ugh, was horrible.

"We just finished a promising test event, patch to appear public should not take more than few days tops" - From RaceSimCentral.

I had a lot of problems as well during the race, never made it past the first lap, and I think Tim was kind enough to drop some of us from the results. At the race start, everyone flashed X's above their heads, disappeared, then cars would reappear and then disappear at random. When green came out, I could see no one, so I just pulled to the left side and took it easy. Cars reappeared, but then game became laggy. So much so that, when I made it to one of the straights, the game went slow and then caught back up so quick that I didn't have time to react and ran it into the wall, ending the race for me.

Dunno if my probs were from my connection or the patch. Tim said I was lagging during practice, but I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Especially not before the server fart, but after, the game turned messy for me, w/ cheverolet's appearing and stuttering graphics. I started to download the newest set of skins, but it didn't finish before qualy started. Dunno if that would have helped.

Horrible experience for me as well-- frame rates and lag made it impossible. I unfortunately collected a DNF because I could not see a thing because of the car in front of me lagging like I have never seen before. The worst experience of my racing here in terms of pure systems.

I don't think it has anything to do with the skins. I was using a skin nobody had (I didn't upload it) and while everyone saw me as a Chevy, I don't think anyone suffered from CTDs, blue flags, or any other problems you described.

Crashed during practice once I think but luckily, never mid race. Let's hope that patch will fix this...(and some other things)

As a test, why not take out the Skins from the R2P server, and have NO one use custom skins for a race. If the problem go'es away, it's solved. If not, then that wasn't it. Seems like that would please the masses?
