Pictures from our trip to the Royal Gorge suspension bridge.

I thought I'd share.

The Royal Gorge suspension bridge is about an hour from my house, and being on mid-tour my wife and I decided to add it to the places we've already traveled to thus far over the past week or so (we both had already visited it, but we hadn't been there together, so what the hell, right?). The suspension bridge is the highest in the world (1,098 ft. or some such figure) and has a small zoo, an incline railway down to the bottom (so you can check out the Arkansas River that runs at the bottom of the gorge and you can look upwards WAYYYYY above your head at the bridge), and a cable car that runs across the gorge for an alternate way to cross.

It's the baby! Getting a little playtime in before we drop her off at Grandma's.

The wife and I on the incline railway (the cars are basically steel cages suspended on a cable that runs beneath the railway... it's about a 55 degree incline).

Me at the bottom. It snowed the day previous. To the left of the picture is the Royal Gorge Railroad. A passenger/tourist train runs on it daily.

The wife and I with the Arkansas River in the background. That broken-up, snow-covered wooden tube in the background on the other side of the river supplied nearby Cańon City with fresh water for about 70 years.

Looking up the cliff walls on the way back up. The cliff's edge is about 950 ft. above me at this point.

On the north side of the bridge. See me holding onto the rail? That's because I'm scared of heights and am extremely nervous in this picture. The bridge sways in the wind, and there are sizable gaps between the wood planks that let you see allllll the way to the river below. :)

The wife and I at the midpoint. That thing you see in the background is the Skycoaster. Think of a giant swing that you lie down on that swings you out beyond the gorge wall.

View of the bridge from the north side.

The wife with the bridge in the background.

Me with the bridge in the background.

Uh... basically the same thing.

Me!

Each of those bundles is about two inches thick.

The cables extend into gigantic anchors that are sunk deep into the granite on each side of the bridge. The engineering keeping the bridge up is astonishing to see.

Waiting for the cable car to arrive. As the conductor said: it needs about 300 seconds to get across, but only about 7 seconds to reach the bottom of the gorge. ;)

Great pictures Ray, thanks for posting! Very nice family by the way, and nice to see there is an other racer with a phobia (claustrophobia in my case). That is one high bridge!

Blimey that's tall. I don't think you'd even get me on it, let alone look over the side.

Nice pics Ray.
