RBR - Getting Online
03:42 PM on Mar 27, 2008

I have just bought Richard Burns Rally and I'm really impressed. I'd like to get online with my team mates and see how it works but I'm having trouble figuring it out.
I have downloaded RBRNetv3, extracted the files, and read the readme. When I double-click either RBRnet.exe or Lobby.exe I get the error message "This application has failed to start because dx8vb.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."
I haven't got anything to re-install, I downloaded the files again and got the same problem. The readme says,"If the program fails to run then you might need the Visual Basic 6 runtimes available from Microsoft." I looked into this but I don't want to risk installing it if that is not the problem, and the MS site lists the core files with Visual Basic 6 Runtimes and the dx8vb.dll is not mentioned so I'm not sure that it is the problem.
Could anyone help me out with this please? I am on Vista by the way. Any and all help is greatly appreciated ;-)

Sometimes i get dll errors sourced by directx too. I write the missing file on google (theres a website which allow ppl to download the dll files for free), download it and copy paste the dll file to your system directory. It always solved my problems on that error :)

Thanks Tolga, I downloaded the dx8vb.dll file and it was a Visual Runtime file. That alone didn't do it but I installed the Runtime thing from the MS site and I managed to open the Lobby.exe file, that opened the small lobby window and connected me. I could see 2 servers and 5 players, one server wasn't passworded so I tried to join, but I got "Error 0x1AD: ActiveX component can't create object". I tried to create a room and got the same thing.
I'm now Googling the Error code but getting bogged down a bit...

Brian, you probably won't need to install any other files. In Tolga's situation he is missing a couple core files from within Windows, it's not a RBR problem. When he straightens that issue out he'll be able to play online.

As for what you see in the lobby window - you'll see personal servers some blokes have running so they and there friends can race. There typically are no public servers like you get with other sims. You can run the server program yourself, and even race the rally yourself. And give the server name your created out to your friends so they can join your server.

Be sure to post the time you'll be up so others can join in as well. If it's 8pm or later Mountain Time I would definately join in.

Well it seems that all this is a Vista problem. I got some mates together for a test and the only one who could join a server was the one who was on XP. I chatted with some of the guys on there and they were all on XP. My brother and I couldn't join or create any session.
This is a shame because anyone on Vista is not going to be able to join in on RBR when R2P start hosting events, and I was looking forward to that. I'll keep looking for a fix for RBRNet on Vista and I'm trying another server utility called RBROnline2 in the meantime.

Waiting on mine to be delivered. Should be Monday or so. Can't f'n wait. Is Tim still thinking of running some events? I love Rally racing very much. Not the greatest at it but love it.
