Officially Finished with Race 07
08:15 PM on Apr 11, 2008

After the Caterhams mishap earlier this week, today's EURO WTCC event was Race 07's critical chance to keep me playing. Qualified 8th or something out of 12 and then after about 5 or 6 laps or something my very first ever disconnect.

I went to the lobby and then the Race2Play server was showing a 5000 ping. Dunno if this was just me or if the R2P server took a dump, but either way, this game is laughably buggy and I'll be saving it for an offline fun game occasionally and not competing with it anymore.

Simbin, shame on you.

I must say I'm quite glad to hear this. I didn't really want to get into Race 07 but have had that nagging feeling I'm missing something. Thanks for your coverage.

It's a pity the rfactor conversion is illegal. Can't R2P start running an aliased event or an underground server? ;-)

I don't understand how the conversion is illegal. I would think if they just changed all the names so that they were fictional it would not be enforceable. Call it 'Touring Car Challenge' or something instead of WTC. Use original liveries and I can't see what they can do.

I wish they would make an A1GP mod in the same way. Just use national liveries without using the name A1GP..

I guess what makes it illegal is not the licensing or naming but the fact it's a conversion - source files ripped with minimal modification.

CTDP, IDT etc don't pay licensing fees and I'm sure they could release a A1GP mod the same way.

I think I posted elsewhere about the great pity of Race07; perhaps when one day I will have a faster machine, it will alleviate some of its ridiculous flaws-- although a faster PC will do nothing for the idiocy of automatic pit-stops and an on-line code drafted with an idiot's brush. Really pathetic.
Having said that, and without for a second wanting to represent those who run this organization (R2P) so well, I do think that R2P is a serious organization covering a great hobby and passion; it would do itself a disservice if it allowed any kind of "illegal" or even a shady mod. It is in the interest of R2P, and therefore of its loyal supporters, to allign itself with companies such as ISI, SimBin, SimFactory, et al and ensure that we don't have anarchy on our servers with all sorts of mods-- particularly if these are in full breach of the very sims that we are supporting (flaws and all).
Therefore in conclusion, I am both beating on SimBin for their poopie product but supporting them by not wishing to see a mod, even if superior, plucking away the groceries from their basket.
Geez, I think I had too many cookies tonight, that just came pouring out and I think I confused even myself.

I wouldn't worry Francesco, no business in their right mind would consider running an illegal mod and I'd be disappointed in R2P if they did. I said it tongue-in-cheek in spoilt-frustration.

What sort of cookies?

I happen to like race 07 and have not had any significant problems with it that I haven`t had with every other sim too. I don`t like the auto pit thing though.

Humourously enough, I hadn't had enough punishment (evidently) and signed up for a Race 07 FBMW season opener event today since I didn't have anything pressing to do and I enjoy the BMW cars in RF. So, I qualified pretty low, but the race was going good and I'd clawed my way up to 4th when, you got that right, "connection to host lost". Hahah, it's just too perfect that my third race is the third strike.

Fortunately this time it was the whole Race 07 server that bailed and not just my client, so I don't get a DNF and I keep my 4th spot and hopefully some people are further convinced that the game is a mess.

It's a shame because I happen to have thought that the offline racing was quite good. The views/sounds/force feedback is great IMO. Sense of speed in the open wheelers is nice too.

Correction: Tim said the issue was the server itself and not the race07 server process. So, it's just 2 strikes and bad luck so far. Still, not terribly impressive. ;|
