Starting out with Open Wheel
05:01 PM on Apr 13, 2008

Evening,

I've decided that I'd like to start in some of the Open Wheel Rfactor races, however, I'm not sure where to begin. I will most likely be joining VindexWorks F1 after I get my rank up, but as i'm new to the Race2Play open wheel series of cars, I'm not sure what to expect.

I've raced F1 with friends and I'd like to think i'm very competitive in open wheel cars.

Can anyone make any suggestions of a series I could join to start out?

Thanks

I have the same dreams. I recommend the FBMW if the racetime is good. Actually even if it's not good, I still think it's worth waking up at 5am for. Nice entry level machine, not too many things to tweak, and now they are official races for rank. Grids full every week, best racing I've had at R2P.

I personally can't stand the formula trainers, but of course they are the other option.

Alright Jonty, fair enough, whats the series called, FBMW?

I noticed that every open wheel series is a combination of letters, and numbers.

The snails shall dominate Tim's F1 series in the future!

Andrew, the Formula IS (F2, I think) would be a good series to consider if you are interested in something a bit more exotic (i.e. fast) than FBMW. It's essentially a fictional F1 car but the series is for novices only and allows traction control and ABS and stuff and I think maybe has reduced damage. It would be a good primer before moving up to F1 with the big boys.

Well guys if you're interested I have a dedicated server running CTDP'05. We could schedule some fun-runs if we get more drivers - just for fun and practice. You can easily learn to drive F1 car when alone on track, but it's impossible to learn driving in traffic - bots suck big time - you need real people around you to really gain experience and this can be done only during the race. And I believe that only F1 races can really prepare you for F1 races :)

I think we might have lots of fun if we find enough people for no-points no-glory events like this.

Anyway...I sure want more F1 action than 1 race per two weeks so if you like the idea or have some other ideas for F1 fun let me know and maybe we'll get somewhere with this. I think it's worth to try - this may be a great learning experience for all of us.

Andrew,

As someone mentioned, the Formula 2 series was put in place for this very reason. It is a great starting point for some F1-type racing and will get your blood pumping for sure.

Also, the F1'05 server is open to anyone up to race day. You are welcome to come onto the server and get some laps in with the 'big boys' to test the waters.

Sounds good Tim, thanks for letting me know.

Tomasz, sure i'll take you up on your offer. See if you can find a couple people who would like to join in, I think i might have a friend whose willing to take part in the no-points races as well. Let me know.

I've found time to start out in Open Wheel, and thus upgraded to the new Rfactor to start out in open wheel.

Can someone point me to a good event on the current calendar?
I saw the USA FBMW at Valencia. Is that the best bet?
