I saw the new Acura Lola of Adrian Hernandez and it frankly is very underwhelming. Lowes Boring Fernandez/Acura P2 I judge most paint-jobs thru a television so what the car really looks like may not be what I see every week, but silver and a low contrast blue do NOT really jump off the screen. I have complained about The various Audi R8 colors (or Colours for my Euro pals) for years as well. Except for the Croc car in Aussie-land for the Milenium race and the Champion team colors, the Audi's have been a boring silver with just a few hints of color.
Similarly, All black cars. I was stunned when the all black Champcars of Cedric the Entertainer won the year's first paint scheme award this year.(this is just an inside champcar award, one more thing to write a press release about) The CTE cars are black with small,, REALLY small bits of color on the nose. Like the Havoline cars of years past that Michael Andretti and Cristiano da Matta drove for Newman Haas, black may look wonderful when you stand beside it, but on TV is just loses all form. All you see is a dark smudge moving across the screen. The Mazda team in ALMS had a marvelous yellow and blue paint that jumped out at you. You knew, even if it was just a glimpse in the background as it got passed by GT1 and 2 cars, that you were seeing the Speedsport car. UNTIL, that is, until they got Road and track sponsorship. Now the car is blue and white and matches almost perfectly the layout of the Dyson Lolas. So instead of immeadiately recognizing the Super-loud, slow-as-a-slug Mazda, I have to look to see if it's that radial engined car of one of the two Dysons about to expire. I never liked the Mclaren/Penske red and white striped cars, not because of the paint, but because I didn't like the F1 Mclarens beating the blood red Ferraris all the time. And I didn't like Emmo in his Penske beating Al Unser Jr. in his blue and White Valvoline cars. (I must say the blue and white theme really looked great with Robbie Gordon and Nascar's Mark Martin after Al Jr. left) As a lifelong Al Jr fan, I was forced to accept the Penske paint when he joined the team. But when Marlboro left Mclaren and tainted the Deep Blood red of Ferrari with some Reddish Orange crapola, I had double the reason not to like them. So what are your favorite paint schemes?
The white Nissan's of Reid/Leslie during the late 90's
NEW Link!! The white with blue/red stripes of the 98 Oreca Vipers, a color theme that has been mimicked by more recent BMW M3 type cars.
The classic soft greyish-blue/orange of the LeMans Gulf Wier Porsche 917s Steve McQueen's car in Le Mans Breaking my monotone rule, the solid orange of the old Mclaren Can AM cars.

I love the GULF scheme. It is a all time favorite of mine. I agree with you. There needs to be something about a scheme that makes you stand out or get noticed. Now, a race cars does not have to look good to be fast, but if you have a great scheme & are fast, then everyone knows who you are. You always need a accent color & a contrasting color to go with you base color. Now, this is my opinion, but when I do a skin, I always try to follow this formula. :):)
Paint schemes should be distinctive at a glance. The Ferrari and McLaren F1 teams have that down to an art form. My own sim racing cars tend to be very simply done because complex paint jobs just turn to mush when they are reduced to just a few pixels. My traditional scheme of black with yellow and red trim is easy to identify, even at a distance.
I think your spot on. Simple can be distinctive. It's more about color, contrast & accent than the complexity(SP) of the paint scheme. :)
Take the Lister Storm for example. Now that is one BUTT UGLY car, but you put the black to hide the uglies and then accent it with either the multi-colored ballons or the white hood and you've got something. Just avoid those all darkish looking cars. dave
HERESY!!!!
As for real life liveries, I actually thought that the McLaren test livery in Orange looked pretty good last year. Would have preferred it to the Silver-Chrome finish.
I've always preferred the black w/gold pinstripping of the '72 Lotus Europa (also used on a very few others). The gold pinstripping really stands out.
fancy paintjobs are hard to fix when ther is damage. my fav's are the petty blue superbird, john player special schemes, the classic earnhardt wrangler car, bill elliots coors not "coors light" t-bird, the saleen schemes, parnelli jones t/a mustang, the mopar barbed wire team schemes, and a certain 69 orange charger with a confederate flag on it.
Corvette yellow with hints of black. As distinctive as Ferrari red.
Al Jr fan here as well. Havent Googled him in a while to see what he's up too, but WTF is he waiting for??? He should driving ALMS LMP.
Just got my first good look at the new Renault F1 paint scheme and I like it. The old Blue/yellow car seemed to be the wrong shades...Probably because I grew up as an LA Ram Football fan and like the blue/yellow shades of their old uniform(also for the record I HATE the blue/Gold they now have))
did I miss any dicipline? Oh yeah, that mouthy Funny car reminds me too much of the grinning Trans Am car from a few years back. ps...rumour of the week. Mini Me will join Danica to race certain ALMS events....strange how she fit last year in a Grand Am DP car with tall Rusty Wallace but can't find a seat that will fit the Acura/Courage of Andretti/Green and it's stable of non NBA sized pilots. oh and Mike M...I couldn't believe how un-loverly the The Lister Storm was when I saw it in pale grey. I can honestly say it is the best looking black car I have ever seen. lololol dave henrie ps, I got a better looking photo of the 2000 Viper so I redid the link in the first post. Go back to the first post and check out the link in the middle of the post. |
