More than just a flagger now
03:46 AM on Aug 04, 2008

Well, it seems my diligence as a new flagger has unexpected rewards.

I just got invited to participate in a 2-day driving school that a regional BMW club is hosting later this month. One of our flaggers is connected with the club and apparently is tasked with finding a recruit from within the track organization. Turns out, my tired old Neon doesn't look quite so tired, as it caught his eye and prompted him to speak with me. After a couple minutes of chit chat, I was offered the chance to start driving for real (not racing, mind you... high performance driving... which, in my book, is shorthand for *pre*-racing school. ;)

Anyway. I have some priority work to do on my car in the next couple weeks just to get it to pass safety tech. I won't be pushing this 10 year old car very hard, but I'd like to know it's safe and will get me home again after 2 days of track time.

This is just aweXome!

Time to see if all the countless hours and laps I've spent on the sim version of the Glen will shave some of that learning curve off. ;)

That is awesome Pete.

Brake pads and good fluid. That will do the trick right there.

Also, clean the car out very good. Last thing you want is a coin flopping around while you are on track :-)

It was recommended that I use semi-metallic pads. So I've got that and an all around fluid change (brake, oil/filter, possibly coolant). I also have a broken exhaust which I've managed to barely hold together. Needs a new cat and everything back. Also, the fuel filler neck leaks (my biggest safety worry), so I need a new one of those too. The exhaust is long overdue for fresh replacement, but the filler neck I'll happily scrounge from a junk yard. Maybe I'll be lucky and I'll find a fresh enough exhaust on a junker too. My only other concern is a possible leak in one of my rear struts. But that's lower on the list.

*sigh* Money. Why does it always come down to money? LOL

At least the 2-day fee is being waived so that eliminates one of the biggest hurdles I've faced. Getting the car safe and reliable is the much bigger concern. We'll see.

Fantastic news Pete! You are absolutely going to love it. If you start to get serious into this then say goodbye to your cash. This is a very expensive hobby. In my eyes, it's all worth it. At least it's cheaper than boats.

Post some video if you get some.

Heh.

Cash.

I already have none... hence the car being in the tired state it's in for daily road use, let alone track use. ;) Boy I really hope I don't break anything, or something let's go. This car is my daily transportation. :(

If all goes well (and it probably will), then the real, lurking problem I expect I will soon face in full, is the insatiable craving I will develop to do this again.

And again.

I need more money!!!!

MAke sure the car will pass tech Insp or it is all for not!!!!!!!! Find yourself a cheap up to date helmet on Craigs list. While in the junk yard, look for a set of cheap intact rims. If you like the speed, which I think you will, you will have a set of rims for those r or z rated tires you'll soon end up buying!!!! There are a bunch of tuner parts for your neon also. Good Luck!!!

Thanks guys.

I'm keeping it slow and simple this first time. But I'm sure I'll come away with a speed addiction. ;)

Day 1 complete. Even in a 10-yr old Neon, the experience of driving for real blows simming outta the water.

Tomorrow we expect rain at least part of the day. I just might have something for those M3's after all. ;)
