Continuing with our "Summer's last Hurrah" weekend, went to the Mystic Seaport with the family today. Arrived just in time for the last regatta of the day:
If something looks wrong in the scale in that pic, it's because those are remote control racing yachts. Most of the ones we saw range from 6ft to 10ft masts; the ones at sail here are probably 7ft. The Seaport is home to the Charles W. Morgan, the only surving 19th century American whaling ship.
Belowdecks, seems cheery enough:
The hold, not nearly so cheery. Doesn't look like the kind of place you'd want to cross an ocean, does it? The Morgan didn't do any slave trade, but the ships that did looked much like this one.
Still a lovely day back outside.
Busy day on the Mystic River.
The Seaport owns 37 acres of waterfront, with 60 historic buildings. Most are operated throughout the day as they would have been hundreds of years ago. The Cordage, where ropes are made:
Unfortunately, the inn didn't live up to the sign on the outside:
The Morgan's figurehead:
A working steam ferry:
Lexi mans... er, womans... the salute cannon.

Nice pictures! | ||
Lol, Michael, I noticed right away... No people on the yachts! I have an RC yacht just like the ones in your shot. Again, very nice pictures, makes me wish I was there. Dan | ||
Come on up Dan! Plenty more great spots to relax in Connecticut! |
