Race2Play policy changes
09:54 PM on Sep 08, 2008

With Season 10 right around the corner comes a few changes to our regulations and procedures. The primary focus for these changes is to make our policies easier to follow and standardize procedures across all races. Here is the short list of changes;

Policy #25.4.2 - Punting (changes in bold font)
The term "punting" is defined as nose of car (or side-of-the-nose to the other car) contact, where the leading car is significantly knocked off of the racing line. The “nose” of the car is defined as the area from one front wheel, around the front of the car, to the other front wheel including the wheels themselves.

Any driver who "punts" another car, either off track or into a spin, at any time during the race, must serve a drive-through penalty...

Policy #0.5 - Re-joining the racing surface
Added, "Any instances of a driver using the racing surface as a place to make a U-turn (180 degree turn) or an unsafe re-entry to the racing surface will result in an automatic disqualification."

Policy #25.6 - Off-Course Excursions & Spins
Added, "An unsafe re-entry onto the racing surface is grounds for automatic disqualification."

As of the start of Season 10, Race2Play is standardizing our race-start procedure to be Straight Standing Start (no formation lap). The very few events that may use anything but a standing start will be noted on the the specific series page.

TM edit: We will keep the No-ESC rule unchanged.

Wow, partially abandoning the no-esc rule in qualifying is a surprise!

Are the above rules going to be enforced during qualifying (besides #0.8)? It seems to me that these rules are broken more in qualy and lap 1 than any other time.

I'm amazed as Mr. Kolar on that. I kinda liked that cause it made people be more careful in the 10 minutes of the q session. Could you post an addenda on that like "you need to move your car off the track in order to press ESC" ? just a thought.
With the others I totally agree. It will make optimistic drivers to think again on jumping the inside line at the last minute even if they no-way-in-hell could squeeze through :)
Good job on the update. Downloaded the PDF to read it all again.

I dont really understand the motivation about removing the no esc rule, but maybe its hard to police 100% dunno
And I agree with Mr Rus, should be something about NOT hitting esc when u on the raceline, sometimes the car doesnt get removed from track right away and if you happend to be right behind when that happens..well...

What about last lap punt? surely wont make much sense to get a drivethru there since most tracks finishline is just a few meters after the pitentrance

I dunno about that punt rule being affective in all laps. A perfect example would be the SuperCup Spa USA race, watch as the car ahead of me contiually chopped across my front end forcing me to brake hard to avoid hitting them. This was clearly done to keep me behind while clearly risking himself being spun out/punted.

example 2, guy in front outbrakes himself into chicane and goes wide, guy behind makes a nice corner, guy in front corrects and slices back to race line and runs into guy behinds nose and gets punted.

I am sure there are many other instances/examples.

But we will just have to see how it goes, just seems most of my involvements in punts are usually (with all due respect) cars I am lapping that just aren't paying attention.

Maybe it would be a good idea to remind everyone about 24.5.1 since that rule appears to have been modified a few times since R2P began.

This may start to be off topic. But, refering to my post (#3), is it possible to get a replay of qualy for review purposes? Or how can we be sure that these infractions are rendered with castigation during qualy?

[Edit by TM - It is not possible in all sims. rFactor-based sims we can have separate qual-replays but not Simbin titles. Still worth it to file a protest/complaint as then we know who to watch closely in qualifying even if they get away with it once.]

I enthusiastically applaud the decision to expand the punting rule to the entire race.

Kent makes a good point, however. Perhaps the word "avoidable" would resolve that issue when coupled with a stern declaration that there are VERY few instances in which such contact will be deemed "unavoidable". Or maybe that would just add more confusion and therefore more work for the ultimate "decider", i don't know. But it sounds reasonable.

But i have to say, Kent, from my perspective (and i'm not referring to your specific example because i haven't watched that replay), someone sticking his nose inside when he has not cleanly made a pass, just to see if the other guy will roll over for him and then "accidentally" punting when he doesn't, clearly falls into the category of avoidable contact.

All contact is avoidable

Good to hear of these needed changes. Mostly the punting at any time rule. Grand-Am and ALMS (and most sanctioning bodies) are VERY strict with their 'avoidable contact' rules and they don't mess around at all with giving stop and go penalties.

The use of the Esc key I'm not a big fan of though, although there was a time or three that I wished I could have, usually when there are 2 classes of cars and can't get a clear track. I have a feeling that this will be a hazard at times because most don't pull off to the side first and WHAM!
