Short Biography
08:11 PM on Dec 25, 2006

Born in a small town in Northern Minnesota I ended up in San Antonio via a cirituos route which took me through Lansing Michigan.

Met my lovely wife Melissa about 5 months after moving here and being horribly agorophobic at the time, it took me another 2 months to talk to her. We've been married since 1992 and have a 12 year old girl and an 8 year old boy.

My vocation is that I am a bond analyst here in San Antonio at a small fixed income company. I was signed up to take the CFA Level 1 exam earlier in December, but postponed it for the June exam...it's the toughest thing I've ever had to do to date and I understand it gets tougher. I have an interest in economics and expect that when I complete the CFA program I hope to continue to work in the fixed income arena.

All in all that's pretty much it. Been racing online since about 2000 beginning with GPL, then the GT Racing mod for F12K2 and on to GTR. I'm a novice F1 history buff who has all the Duke Video F1 reviews from 1970 - 1986 (missing a couple years in their though) and am happy to say that regardless of the time of night, my daughter and I have been watching every F1 race since about 1999 together. Hopefully we will make it to Montreal for the 07 race but that remains to be seen.

So - there's a small bio. I like the R2P concept and the fellas here seem to be a good fair bunch to race so with the one season I'm signed up in I hope to have a blast.

Tracy,

I gotta ask, does your screen name (mogwai) have anything to do with the movie "Gremlins", or the scottish band? And if so, please elaborate as to why, how, etc.

If the question is not something you wish to make public, then please tell me to go fly a kite.

Cheers! :-)

The Scottish Band...but not many in America understand that...most often I'm asked if I turn into something different after midnight or something like that.

Been using that moniker for some time now (since "come on, die young" came out...the first cd I had from them...brilliant stuff) as not really anyone seemed to notice...especially in GPL circles around 99-00.

Speaking of Mogwai - we saw them finally in 2004 when they were touring for "Happy Songs for Happy People"...if you've heard of the band, then I imagine you have heard "Hunted by a Freak"...imagine 4 guitar players, 2 drummers and a bassist belting that song out on stage...it was an epiphany for me...incredible band to hear live...

SWEET! Another music lover!

Wow, I thought I was the only one who had epiphanies. Does your left big toe tingle all funny like when an epiphany comes to fruition ;-).

LOL - my jaw just dropped wide open when they played it live...I just couldn't imagine a louder more melodic sound than they even had on the cd...it was incredible. It reminded me of Ride but with a lesser "noisy" quality to it...while it was a wall of sound it was still coherent...not fuzzy.

I sharted it was that good. What else do you listen to?

Other than Country/Western and a few forms of really off the wall Folk music, I enjoy just about every facet/type of music.

I must admit though, I am a child of the 80's and really have an affinity for that era.

Classical, big band, pop, jazz, fusion, punk, synth, some but not all rap (pop rap, "gangsta" rap - lol!), heavy metal, thrash metal, big hair metal, rock, blues, opera, etc., etc., etc. You name it, I will probably enjoy (some forms more than others of course).

Mannheim Steamroller rocks - now that is a good live concert.

Steve, I think that you & I would get along famously musically. :) :) We have a thread at my home site that has a wide variety of taste in music, most by the same people, so, we are not alone. I guess good music is good music no matter the genre. I'm guessing that Mogwai play rock, but of what kind may I ask ??

Not sure I can really describe mogwai except in relation to other bands. I supposed it's rock (in that they use...like...an orchestra pit full of 6 string electronic guitars), but definately alternative. But, not in The Cure, Bauhaus, Souxsie and the Banshees alt music you may be thinking of.

The closest thing I can think of is a combination of Sigur Ros (quiet, melodic and absolutely beautiful modern music at times) with Ride's mass wave of guitar. Mogwai has very few lyrics - often unconnected with the music...

To get an idea of their best work, it's worth, IMHO, to download "Hunted By a Freak" from their next to latest album called "Happy Songs for Happy People". The song name has nothing to do with the song (as far as I can tell), but really shows how they have matured. Then, once you listen to it...imagine hearing it live...but outperforming the track they laid down on the cd.

Hey Tracy,

I was with Steve in the wondering about the handle too. While not my favorite band I still own a lot of early albums (ten rapid, young team, kicking a dead pig) and have seen them live a couple of times. Definitely not a common "favorite" but perhaps a sign of refined taste in music and a more open mind ;)

Ride was also one of my gateways to noise ;)

My Bloody Valentine still rank as one of my all time favorites.

If you haven't already Godspeed You Black Emperor and Explosions in the Sky would fit very nicely along side yer Mogwai cds!

Re: Canadian GP. I would recommend deciding early and booking a nice B&B for your stay in Montreal. Lovely city and great experience. Mind you the prices have driven me off and I find better value at Mosport for the ALMS these days. I still may be tempted to sneak down for a day if the new liveries and on track action are good in 2007!

cheers,

oliver

Oliver - GSYBE is absolutely brilliant! They were in Austin a couple years back with another one of the Kranky Label bands (Jessica Baliff or Low I think), but it if I recall it was for Slow Riot...brilliant also live!! Amazing someone else has heard of them...I think we are going to get along just fine.

Yep - MBV is fantasic. The whole softLOUDsoftLOUD thing that Mogwai used to so made me somewhat schizo but I still think it was a turning point...Young Team was brilliant...I just felt like they were more consistent on Happy Songs...but still great.

Thanks for the tips on Montreal. My daughter (13 yrs) has been a big fan of F1 since she was just old enough to talk with me about it...so, it's really her dream to go, but I think all of us would enjoy it. I'd love to see an ALMS event as well...espcially at Road America...so perhaps if time allows.

Your the second person in as many days to mention Explosions in the Sky...I'll give em a look.

My wife and I also run the range to listening to old Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance...some old 4AD stuff...and lately loads of Sufjan Stevens...and sadly the now broken up Tram...it's slower stuff but definately as good IMHO.
