My first impressions of the G25

Well, I went from an ActLabs Force RS to the G25. The ActLabs blew out a FF gear so I figured the G25 was a good mid-level upgrade. So many of my opinions will be comparison with the Force RS.

First of all, size. I was worried when I got the box that they left something out. My ActLabs box was the size of a small refrigerator box, but all was packed in there tightly.

Setup was quite simple, although the shifter was in gear when I first tried to set it up in rF, so I couldn't figure out for the life of me why it kept trying to assign button 9 instead of my brake pedal.

I used the preset setup in rF for the G25 except I changed up the Degrees of Rotation in the controller file to 900. One quick test drive and found that this was a little too extreme for a race car. Changed it to 599 degrees and it was much better. This takes a lot of getting used to, since you have to steer alot more to get around a corner, but twitchy steering is something I have hated in all the wheels I have tried. I LOVE it at the current setting. You actually have to turn the wheel more than 2 inches to get around a hairpin!

Shifter is *alright*. I didn't use a shifter before so it took me a while to get used to. The gates are still a little too close, so it is easy to mis-shift, but it got better the more I practiced. Could be better, but I think I will get used to it completely before long.

Pedals: I had been complaining on another forum about the lack of pedal *throw* on the Act Labs, so when I first pressed down on the pedals, I was severely worried. The throw of the pedals is miniscule in comparison. However, the pots are much better and thus the pedal movements are much smoother. Makes up for the lack of *throw*. Pedal Pressures are *alright*. These are better pedals than the standard ActLabs or MoMo, but they are still "cheap" and so I can't expect too much.

The wheel unit is TINY in comparison. Im used to the ActLabs which takes up a huge portion of my desk. The wheel seems well built, metal wheel and paddles, with good leather on the wheel. It turns very smooth, and again, the 599 degrees of rotation is a dream for me. The forcefeedback seems a bit weaker than the ForceRS, but then again, it was strong enough in the ForceRS to blow out (what I assume to be) the plastic gear. Don't want that to happen in this one.

I drove some laps, and after getting accustomed to shifting with the stick, I started turning times that where actually a bit better than I was before. This of course could simply be a *Jedi mind trick* but driving seems easier and smoother.

Now for the one really bad thing that I HATE. ActLabs had a great setup for the connections. All wires plugged into a cartridge, which could easily be disconnected from the back of the wheel so that the wheel could be removed in a jiffy. With the G25, all wires are connected to the underside of the wheel unit. Then you have to run them thru the grooves so they dont get squashed when you clamp the wheel down, then you have a mess of wires all over the desk. Even worse, the USB plug, cannot be detached from the wheel. So every time I need to take it off the desk, I have to unclamp it, unplug the pedals, unplug the shifter, unplug the power, then unplug the USB from my computer (luckily I have a hub on my monitor), then take the wheel and shifter off the desk. Putting it back, is the reverse, cept you have to carefully run the wires thru the grooves, etc... blah. With my ActLabs I could plop the wheel on the desk, plug in the cartridge and start up rF, now it is a PITA process to connect/disconnect the wheel.

Overall, I am happy with it, so far. I don't regret the purchase at all, I just regret the lack of foresight on the part of Logitech when it comes to connecting/disconnecting the wheel. Best possible solution would have been a "Hub" that all things plugged into that could stay on the desk. Then you could simply unplug the wheel and take it off the desk. Ahh well, thats what the designers get paid the big bucks for. (And I don't) :)

Great stuff, thanks for the review. I will be receiving my G25 tomorrow so I'm really looking forward to it now.

I think I'll definitely build an adapter box for mine with some parts from the local electronics store, then the plugs can all go into the adapter box with some shorter cables running to the wheel itself, should make mounting/dismounting a bit easier.

The designers added some real nice touches for people who mount the G25 permanently, like me- I hadn't thought of how some of those same things might be an annoyance to the rest of the world :)

Ok can you really tell us that you use your computer for more than racing??? Just messing with you - I couldn't begin to imagine why you wouldn't want to dissable it quickly...I am using this wheel for both computer and console use so until I get my permanent racing chair I too share you pain...owe well, I guess it's still easier than using a keyboard.
