Shhhhhhh.....Keep yer' voice down....ya' don't want anyone to know. Yes yer' an American who grew up around the local ovals that dot the United States landscape; and you are proud of your blue collar heritage and the rough callous men who go at it bumper to bumper every Saturday night. These are the guys who make a sport of poking fun at the "Wine and Cheese" perdy boys of road racing. Well if the truth be known there are many of these "good ol' boys" who are in the closet so to speak. They won't admit it openly but they are the ones with the big smile on their face when behind the wheel of a GT hardtop or open wheel F3 car. Yes, road racing is fun; lots of fun, but don't let on or you will have to come out of the closet. Shhhhhhh..Bet I'm not the only one. |
I came out of the closet back in 2000 and have been loving it ever since. Ive tried the ovals a few times since but I kept falling asleep (no offense meant) Remember when Nigel Mansel came from F1 to Indycar? He was interviewed on TV after his first oval race in his career (he won it, with ease, by the way). The TV person asked; "Was it scary with the walls and other cars always so close?", and Nigel responded, "No, not really. I had a harder time just staying awake" :-)
Actually his first oval race, he crashed and hurt his back (Phoenix). Couldn't race.
key Deliverance music Well fortunately oval racing is one "closet" I never went in so I never had to come out. /kill Deliverance music I got drove around Riverside in a Porsche before I could see over the dash as a kid and was a "you have to turn left and right to be racing" (offense intentional :P)guy ever since. Though I do recall the days when the "good ole boys" ran at Riverside, that was something to see. Petty (oh sorry the real Petty as in Richard) just going straight through the esses, pavement dirt pavement dirt pavement dirt LOL, great stuff.
I'm definitely not a closet roadracer. I get dizzy when I turn right!
Well, you know how Mansell was so you have to take it were it comes from, also consider the team he had at the time. Many people on my land think oval racing is just so simple and easy and always said that any good road racer would shine on it, well, lately some road racers have found its not that easy as it might look. As must of my racing books tell, oval racing is neither harder nor easier, just plain different. I enjoy both, each has its own trick and both are hard to master.
When I got back online & started running rFactor, I found out that I was a much, much better road racer than I ever was a oval racer, so go with your strengths !!!!!! :) :) :)
I agree Fernando Oval racing is very difficult in areas that road-racing is not, and vice versa. I have a lot of respect for the oval racers, but it isnt for me anymore.
If any form of racing were "easy," there'd be a lot less golfers... ;-)
This is a different Dennis. Well said Fernando! I like them both too. You have to give NASCAR drivers credit for the level of competition. Drivers from other disciplines all say the same thing when they first get there, that the level of competition is way above what they expected. NASCAR also runs three road circuits, F1 refuses to go near an oval. I agree with Darrell Waltrip, if drivers want to be considered the best in the world, they should race on more than one type of circuit. I would love to see NASCAR run street circuits, like the Aussie V8 Supercars and CASCAR. In Christian Racing I race roadies on Monday nights and Trucks on Thursday nights. Both have their challenges and I average middle of the field in both series. I usually end up in 4th or 5th place on the road courses and any where from top 10 to top 20 in the trucks. The fields differ a bit in size. We usually have a field of about 6 to 10 cars in the road series and up to 30 to 40 trucks on Thursday nights. I guess what I'm getting at here is that, just because your a good road racer doesn't mean you'll be great on ovals. The approach to a turn is completely different, and different ovals require different attacks. Some are momentum tracks, while others are drafting tracks, while others are handling tracks, while others are rhythm tracks... etc. Plus the side by side racing and the aggression of the other drivers make for a very exciting race. Also, domination on ovals doesn't mean you'll be great at roadies. Like I said, I enjoy both!
Yo' Billy Bob! I made it! |
