Whats Vista? | ||
Mr Rue advised me of not using it, there are gaming compatibility issues. So I took his advice once again with my current purchase of the new super PC with my choice of XP-Pro.
Vista - new version of Windows. I have heard that it offers noting more than a 3D desktop - and that is only if your video card is fast enough. XP-Pro for me all the way.
Been using the corporate edition since it was released a month or so ago. Its vastly different and much improved from XP in many areas, the 3D Desktop is not really 3D but rather basedupon a new presentation layer that has some great feautures. All in all, if you have a Very modern PC with a DX9 capable GFX card its a great upgrade an performance is amazing, if you are fortunate enough to have a DX10 card it will blow you away, but beware if you only have a mid range PC it offers the gamer very little on low end systems. I have no issues with it whatsoever except for some older OpenGL applications.
I am running Vista on several machines. The things I like about it have to do with security, advanced filesystem, and the advanced memory management technologies. The primary reason I do not recomend it is that many older legacy/dos applications run either slowly or do not run at all. The other issue illustrated by mad dog is a substantial percentage of the operating system is dedicated to rendering graphics that are part of windows. You can disable many of them, but still Vista Extreme has a 14% larger physical memory footprint. That may not sound like much, but that is essentially 14% less of everything... If you are like me and have 8gb of ram, 30" display w/512mb video cards and dual core cpu's, vista is very impressive. If you have anything short of it, it is an annoying os that spends too much time rendering 128X128 icons with fancy shadows when you mouse over. Tom
For the majority of people, Vista isn't a viable option right now. Their PC's just aren't up to the specs needed to run it to it's full potential. Besides, why bother? With XP, you can use Google Desktop, Firefox, Thunderbird and Picasa and have a system that is every bit as good as Vista, and it works on your current machine. On the other hand, if you think eye-candy bloat bs is better than performance, than definitely upgrade.
$159 for the home editiona upgrade? You've got to be kidding! |
