Me and rFactor
06:13 PM on Feb 06, 2007

Pretty interesting that since GTR2's release when ever I try and run anything rFactor I feel even more lost than I used to. Last year I could pretty much drive comfortably in PRC and F3. I didn't drive rF at all for about 4-5 months and now I feel almost totally lost. I did a PRC race and have tried some GP79 and F3 testing and really cannot find a comfort zone. The rear tires are cooking in PRC of course that is because I cannot seem to keep the rear planted.

Last night I got so frustrated lapping Montreal in PRC that I am real close to just retiring the game altogether. Combine that with the fact that the Thursday night PRC series had 8 drivers the first week and only 12 signed up this week and well, I just don't see the point anymore.

Give me another GTR2 series with 20+ drivers and cars that are adjustable :P

I hear ya Kent. I have never felt comfortable in rFactor. Me and it just dont click for some reason. Did the PRC thing a few times, tried the F1 79 cars, and can just not find "it". I am going to give the F1 79 cars another shot next week.

I really like and enjoy tin top mutli class racing with cars I can "feel" and relate to. GTR2 has that, and with weather to boot (well the weather is kinda sorta at the moment lol!). It would be nice to have the flavor of GTR2 with the netcode of rFactor, that would be perfect I think.

A lot of it is controller settings. I felt the same way when rFactor first came out. Most people still don't know how to use rfactor's hot swappable controller settings feature. The "feel" is very different from GTR, and it requires some "seat time" to get all the settings right. If you're trying to drive the F179's using the same controller settings/ranges as, say, V8, you'll more likely to get frustrated.

The physics engine underneath is mostly the same. They're just numbers on a text file. Any perceived difference is all in the way the user interprets the result. :P

Just like every piece of racing equipment in real life has its own distinct feel, so does every piece of racing equipment in sim life.

It's time to Mario up, bucko. Real men drive anything :-D

Real man? Lol. Fellas, you did see Prince a/k/a Tim (hence, HRH) do this "thang" at the Super Bowl, didn't you?

Hey Kent, I know where you're coming from, but the other direction. I tend to spend 80% of my time just playing one game for long periods of time, that way I can learn it, feel it, tweak it, setup all the downloads for it, etc.
Then it's ready to go for a long time. I'm still slow, but at least it's not the game's or hardware's fault :)
For me it was GTL last July-Oct, then rFactor Nov-now. I've tried GTR2 a bit here and there since Dec, and two races now here at R2P, and I'm having a hella time getting used to it.
I made big strides with rF last month, after only installing a few mods but not tweaking anything, just driving. My FF wheel/controller setup is suddenly just as good as GTR2, got things like FOV and headshakes dialed in, etc. It's a shame we have to spend this kinda time tweaking text files for our hobby, but such is life.
I would encourage you, please please don't give up on the PRC field, that would just make it worse. I'd hate to see it fizzle away. Personal preference, but it's still my favorite mod for rF, the sights & sounds, feeling of weight shift, etc are just fantastic. But yeah with all that @ss weight and limited setup they are a pain.
Imagine if they would have put the gas tank in the right place? I hear it's much better to drive with that tweak.
The timeslot is a good one, more people will show (as have already this week). Thought I heard talk of it being bumped a little later maybe to make it easier on the west-coasters, can't remember if that was PRC or not.
Hope to see you out there.

P.S. White text on top of that picture is reaally difficult to read.

hehe Yeah so far EVERY color is hard to read. Just highlight it all and it is much easier.

After jumping into the M3's last night for the first time...I couldn't agree with you more, I am lost on how to get rF to feel comfy...maybe GTR2 will come out with an openwheel mod so we can dump rF??? JMO
