Perhaps someone here can help me out. I've now done 3 races here at R2P - and in all 3 - my qualli and race pace is nearly a second slower than it has been in practice. I appreciate that "pressure" could have something to do with it - but I just have this feeling there's more to it than I've fathomed so far. Example: Last nights race at Anderstorp in the GTC Euro race - in practice I was running consistant mid 1:29's with an occasional "low" 1:29. Yet in the race I couldn't hit a 1:29 at any time in practice, qualli, or race! Maybe I was running on the '03 version - and the server was running the '04 version (or vice versa) ??? Does R2P always use the '03 or '04 versions of a circuit?
Last nights race, the Track & Ambient temps were virtually identical to my practice sessions as well. Note: I never practice "offline" - always preferring to interact and practice/race with other drivers wherever possible. Hope these questions aren't "too newbie" LOL! :-) |
Because of the escalation of the competition of this site, most people become more cautious when they are racing humans than the AI and don't want the nasty DNF logo after their name. I always for the most part am 1/2 off of my non-human competition pace.
In offline mode you will usually be faster period. I am sure there is a certain amount of latency that affects this, but surely the "time of start" track temps, ambient temps and the fact that you are alone all play into this. I typically only practice online, in fact the only offline stuff I do is hotlapping for GTRank times which are noticably faster. You are not alone in your findings that once you join the server it seems like there is a parachute attached to your car LOL. I think it has to do with the time of start as you mentioned, I also think the simple fact that you are now comparing your times to others in the room adding a certain amount of pressure to it all. Who knows but it is all relative, everyone has the same conditions to deal with so it really doesn't matter. Just imagine that while you were running 29's in your practice session that everyone around you on the grid also ran 29's but in this room you are all slower now.
To help, the servers are always set to a 13:00 start time. that only reflects the RACE session though, all the practice, qual, and warmup sessions should be identical to your own servers.
Just an idea: In race weekend if u think it in real, practice 1 is the first touch of the cars to the track and track is dirty in that time, so grip is low. Grip gets better in qual session as we saw it in anderstorp last night. In offline practice i think track is in good condition as in qualy. So, laptimes in offline practice and race weekend is different. Maybe that might be the reason, just a thought.
I agree with Kent (aka Grind) and Joe (aka Tolga) :D Many racers ignore the track conditions and dont change small details to car accordingly (if required) I also believe playing online has some effect on your times, maybe latency, fps or human pressure etc For eg.... Why can i hit 150+ fps offline with full grid and online only reach 80 with less cars? I'm just saying the playing environment is different and it effects the driving.
All good - but as I said at the start - I NEVER race offline. All my practice is online, as I have no time for the AI. I remember from TOCA days - loads of practice offline that never translated to online (plus in TOCA, your setups and gear ratios went cockeyed as well).
Are you practicing online in the R2P server? Not that it matters, IMO every time a room loads there is something different, especially an online room. Sometimes you can be in a practice server lapping your best laps, time runs out, server reloads and you can't get within a second of your previous times. I surely dont have an explaination but I have seen it enough to believe it.
Well being R2P isn't TM.net, The Open series is lucky to get a server by Thursday evening, There is not enough time to practice at least for me in 2 hours in 2 days so i am forced to do it off line with a loaded field on steriods. I got into a thing in S3 with all driving on-line and not a single competitor to be found until race day, and this messed me up with traffic. So...It all depends.
Im curios, if you say "I never practice offline" then what "practice" session are you referring to that you were doing 1:29's as compared to your times in the R2P server?
All online sessions should be exactly the same if perameters are the same ie. "dry" and 13:00 start time. In fact in GTR2 all other session times are fixed as far as I know and changing the start time only effects the race session. That being said each session will have different grip levels, but practice 1 should always be the same no matter the server and Qual 1 or 2 etc. The best way to practice offline I have found is to host my own lan session then it should be exactly like any online session you would do. If the differences were in same session of different online rooms then I can only assume it was you. There otherwise should be no difference. |
