Which AntiVirus? Help Please
06:17 AM on Mar 17, 2007

Ok my subscription for Norton Internet Security and AntiVirus is due for renewal and I have been reading an awful lot of bad press about Norton.

I obviously need some kind of protection but I dont want something that is going to hog all my resources as Norton seems to do.

So what do you guys use?

Am I wrong about Norton?

Norton uses too much memory for me. I use NOD32.

I use a paid version of BitDefender; they offer a free version if you want to check it out. Obviously there are more features and control with the paid one. Very small footprint, not nearly as invasive as Norton or McAfee, and at least as effective from what I can tell so far.

AVG

I have had exceptional luck with Grisoft anti virus. This is a free version. For about 3 yrs now and still have a virus free comp.

Oh, no your not wrong about Norton...very resource hungry

I use Kaspersky and it gets the job done without hogging resources.

I've also used free ones like AVG and Avast and they are pretty good but slow down my computer for some reason.

Yep, I agree - I've tried the free iterations of both AVG and Avast! before and both seemed to work fine. I would choose the free versions of either Avast! or BitDefender now though because of the annoying footer that AVG free puts on every piece of email.

I'm using Avast! You have to change settings so that it won't auto-update in the middle of a race though. It's free but you have to re-register every year.

Well I am sure a lot will disagree with me on this but...Most of us are using some sort of router which puts us behind a natural firewall with NAT. So if you use a little discretion in what you download, particularly where you download from, and dont open email without first checking it out, then you are pretty safe.

My self I use my hotmail account for anything that I have to signup for and MSN wont show me anything suspiscious.

I do have an OLD version of NORTON Antivirus corporate edition but have never had anything caught for 5 years, so either it is crap or I have been pretty safe with my browsing habits.
