GTR2 V8's how do they compare...
09:56 AM on Mar 30, 2007

I have seen some posts in the various GTR2 V8 related threads that appear to slate the mod and its cars.

This can range from very general comments like,
"...these cars are crap". To more specific points of issue like, "They have a lot of grip and they turn in better than these things do. "These things" being the real ones I presume. So I thought I'd check for myself to see how bad the GTR2 mod is, when compared to the real cars.

Obviously I don't have a race tuned V8 to hand at this precise moment in time but I do have some lap times and records that I can compare. Not very scientific I know but the best I can do. Also I don't have any rF races that have been done on the same tracks as the GTR2 ones so far. So I can't compare each mod back to back either. Though this wasn't the point of the exercise in any case. Maybe sometime in the future...

So for the real world data I went to the official V8 site and took the current outright lap record. If this wasn't held by a Ford or Holden V8 I used the fastest time that was.

For the GTR2 data I did things a little differently. As we all know we have quite a few "aliens" racing here. There is also a huge difference in terms of experience, equipment used, set-ups, connections so and so forth. Probably more variables here than in the real world! To that end I thought it fairer to find a R2P average. So I added all the best race lap times together and divided that by the number of drivers. This I felt would give a more accurate ball-park lap time than using the "freaks" laps only. :)

So what did I find?

Track............ Real Time .. R2P Time
Barbagallo........ 0:55.9 .......0:56.7

Hidden Valley... 1:07.9 ...... 1:08.3

Adelaide........... 1:23.2 ...... 1:33.6

Eastern Creek... 1:31.7 .... ..1:34.8

So what does this prove? Well bugger all really. But I do think it casts some doubt as to whether or not the GTR2 mod has "more grip" or "better turn in". If either of these things were true wouldn't the R2P times be faster than the real ones?

I think the R2P times are pretty much on the money with the exception of Adelaide. Not sure what happened there. I'd guess its one or a combination of the following:

..Track not accurate/layout different
..Real cars handle the curbs better then the GTR2 ones
..Real race officials not as strict about cutting as R2P ones
..Enis and Tim were slowing everybody else down :D

I'll keep updating this as we do more races. I can add some rF times to as and when they race the same tracks.

Have to say your right about "..Track not accurate/layout different" thats bound to be the reason for the big differences in times at Adelaide, that version of the track we used aint acurate, for me its far to big. ORSMs Adelaide track should be more like the real thing when it arrives, but its for rfactor.

Actually,i meant the real cars have more grip and turn in a lot better.I've seen mention from guys that were lucky enough to get a ride as a passenger and they claim that the grip factor is damn high.

Ah my deepest appologies Barry for getting the wrong of the stick.

Not withstanding my mistake I still think the times are pretty honest compared to the real cars. If the GTR2 cars had a lot less grip and turn-in we would see much slower times not just a fraction of a second. Also keeping in mind I'm using a ball-park average not the fastest alien laps which, in most cases, stuffs the real times by quite a margin.

I had another play with rF's V8's today and I can see why an rF driver would "think" GTR2 version has less grip. First impression of the rF cars made me think I was driving on rails. Not in the least bit twitchy, next to no understeer and even when you do get some it comes on gradually, (almost like a front wheel drive car does). The arse end does come out from time to time but not very often and certainly when it does it's without any drama.

I did have a good time round Barbagallo today with rF. The first one I have enjoyed thus far but I hope to have more fun soon.

Both mods, although trying to achieve the same thing, need to be driven VERY differently. The rF V8's are so passive compared to the GTR2 ones. They're easy to drive, fairly quick, stable, basically a nice car. I can imagine doing 60+ laps of Barbagallo with few problems. And more than likey enjoying the whole experience.

Now on the "dark-side" we have the GTR2 cars. These are just as fast around the corners as the rF ones with just one major difference. If it goes it goes BIG time. Like I said the rF V8's will understeer but when it happens it comes on gradually and it is very easy to correct. Likewise if the arse end steps out you turn in to it or ease off problem solved almost instantly. If you start to understeer in the GTR2's it's more like the front end of a motor bike. You either have shed loads of grip or f^&K all! At the rear the same thing, if you are extremely fast you might catch it but even if you do you will have lost far more speed than you do in rF.

The rF V8's might well handle as they should and be a 100%perfect simulation of the real deal for all I know. But one thing I do know is that I'd never find them as satisfying to drive as GTR2 ones. Fun maybe but not satisfying.

Every lap of every race thus far has been an adventure. Every race completed has left me dripping with sweat and exhausted. Knowing that pushing just one or two miles an hour faster through a corner, or braking 5ft later can mean the end of your race. Having to watch your tyre temps and fuel load to figure out how far you can push at any given time. This to me is what makes the GTR2 version soooo much better for me. Accurate simulation? Maybe not but challenging, satisfying, fun, (even against the AI which is a first for me in any sim), the feeling that you have achieved something, regardless of where you finish, you bet. :)

I will continue to play with the rF's at Barbagallo to see how fast I can get them to go round. My PB with GTR2 is 55.6 but that is after a few hundred laps. Only managed mid 56's so far with rF but not had anything like that number of laps yet...

One thing I really like about GTR2 V8`s is that the setups are somewhat fixed. You just get in and drive. In most races with unlimited setup possibilities I`m lucky to get a top ten.In these babies I (so far)have been lucky to get top 5`s. So they really cater to a guy like me who is a decent driver but lacking setup know-how.
