Just Getting In The Way
07:34 AM on Apr 08, 2007

I'm out!!! I can't handle it!! I tried to run with you guys but it felt like I was just pissing everyone off; first I almost clip a Porsche because I run off the track then try to rejoin but don't see it. Then everyone gets mad at me for using the ESC key when I crash; more often than not I was hitting walls so hard that my engine was dead or I broke a wheel off. I will admit I probably was using ESC when I shouldn't but it's become a bad force of habit I've been trying to break.
Maybe I'm just not cut out for this online racing thing yet; maybe I just need to run offline and try to get used to running by the rules without anyone online to yell at me.

Hey Brian, just looked at your Driver Page and see 0 events so far, so it's either a practice you're talking about or an event that hasn't shown final yet. Since you talk about a Porsche, I'll just make an assumption that maybe you tried the GTR2 G2/G3 race?

While I wasn't there, I'm sure no one got "mad at you" unless you truly broke one of the cardinal rules like doing a U turn on course, punting people, etc. But I will assume you read the rules here before you entered.

Just slow down. Maybe one out of a thousand people can just join up and run top 5 with some of these stupid crazy fast guys in GTR2. So don't try. If you are crashing into things and wrecking the car, that means you are driving waayyy over your head. Slow down.
New people join up all the time, and no one will get mad at a slow new driver who is safe, predictable, and in control (with the exception of the occasional jerk whom you will find anywhere). You have to be new before you become old, you have to have low time before you have high time.

Do you have rFactor? Might I suggest you join us for a Spec Rhez race? The cars are a hoot, little shoeboxes that you can throw around and lean on each other all day long. Ok not as macho manly as big bad GT cars, but there is much to be learned there.

Can't help you with the ESC habit tho. Or maybe I can. In real life you don't go plowing thru corners and crashing into barriers do you? As we strive to simulate real life, don't do it here. If you did in real life, if you were still conscious or alive, you'd either get out and walk (hitting ESC), or if the car still ran, you'd have to drive it somewhere safe (drive it back to the pits).
Once you get out of the mental habit of thinking like a video game, and treating it like real racing, I'm sure those habits will die.

Hope to see you out there, even if it's just an online practice with 3 or 4 guys. That's the time to ask questions, and most here will answer.

Hey Brian, the guys are right, just take your time, get a feel for one or two cars, stick with it and just pace yourself. Don't go for the best time go for a smooth lap, after you do one, the next will follow. The old cliche' "sometimes you have to go "slower" to go faster works.
I am online quite frequently at night running laps, be more than glad to offer whatever tips I can, perhaps we can jump on TS and talk through some corners.
Hey maybe you need some bright LIME green racer tape to put over the "ESC" button and label "Don't Touch ME"
Good luck and if you see me online join in!!!!

Offline sucks and QUITTING IS NOT AN OPTION.

If you have problems ask and you will be answered be it car choosing, wheel settings, car settings, strategy etc.

I beleive the guy who was having a go at you was JT Edwards. You may not know this, but he is new as well, and he's broken more of the cardinal rules than you have!!! I found it ironic that he was having a go at you for rejoining the track without looking, when in the GTX race last week he was doing the same thing, but to a greater degree IN THE RACE!!!

I hit escape ALL THE TIME during practice and warmup. It's not a problem AT ALL. All we ask is that you are in control of your car, and can set laps without getting in anyones way. Beyond that, speed is a bonus. Please dont leave just because of one bad experience. As TC said, join one of the feeder series (GT3 Cup might be a good start), and build yourself up to GT-O if you dont feel up to it right now... just dont quit, you'll get there buddy ;-)

Oh, and also, if you have a question, just ask, all of us would be perfectly willing to help. Some (cough*Finn*cough) are crap at it, but as long as you ask a few of us you'll find someone who doesnt consider "valuable help" to be the maximum percentage of alcohol in your blood before you cant see the screen ;-)

there is no such thing as a beginner league here at R2P. That means that the learning curve is very steep. i have to agree with these guys, pick 2 or 3 series that you want to run and fouces on those. also, practice a lot, on or offline. all it takes it time and effort and you will be on a reasonible pace soon. remember, a lot of people here have 10+ years of experiance, which is a long way to play catchup from.

There is a good chance that there will be a series starting for less experienced online racers for Season 5. Stay tuned and stick with us. That's not a request.
