A different view of simulated Le Mans
Jun 15, 2012

So I won't be racing Le Mans this weekend in the 6 hour event because I adore this race so much I'll be watching it all... live!

So instead I downloaded the Pays de Loire add-on for FSX and took a helicopter out for a short flight with my sim-camera LOL. The scenery add-on was much lower resolution than I had hoped and particularly at low altitudes this showed up. However, you get a good feel for the topography and layout of the area around the circuit and at higher altitudes it does tidy up a bit. Anyway, thought I'd upload the snaps and share.

I use the REX weather add-on for FSX which features a live weather engine, so the weather you see in the pictures was accurate as of about 1500 BST. Patchy clouds at about 5,500ft. I took off from Arnage airport and climbed to around 500ft before doing a slow lap of the circuit at about 40-60 knots. Then I headed NE towards centré ville and turned 180 to track back over the circuit. Then headed a few Kms in that direction to La Fleche, a small market town near where my folks used to own a house. Unfortunately the Pays de Loire scenery add-on didn't cover far enough South west to go visit Savigny sur le Lude so instead I doubled back to land again at Arnage. Might make a little bit of a theme for this if I can find enough scenery containing the circuits of the world. I definitely have Indy and Monaco...

So here's a different view of our beloved Le Mans in simulation!

I might see if I can download some higher resolution images from google earth and upgrade the circuit area slightly. Will definitely be taking another flight after the England game later to see what the scenery looks like at night :-)

Very nice idea. Fascinating views, I really enjoyed seeing how the circuit merges into the general street layout.
