Heading out to the track!
Jul 07, 2012

Ah, what's better than a day at Lime Rock? NOTHING!!

My family and I are on our way to catch the ALMS event at Lime Rock today. All 5 classes that are running have broken their respective class qualifying records! Can't wait!

Drivers I hope to say hello to today:

Bruno Junquira
Leh Keen
Townsend Bell
Bill Auberlen
Martin Plowman
Tom Milner
Joey Hand
Jan Magnussen
Sasha Maassen

These are drivers I havent had the pleasure of meeting as of yet, outside of Patrick Dempsey, whom my wife is asking me to stand in line with her to be able to meet him! And all this time I thought she wanted to go just to be with me!

Got my beer, vodka, food and sunblock. Maybe I need more beer? Then again, the Harpoon tent is always a happening place...

Hope to have some great photos posted for you guys later in the weekend.

Wow, that is sad, Bob, I've seen Sam at the vintage 'fest for years, always with a big smile next to some racecar he drove back in the day. Sorry to hear hard times have fallen on "Lime Rock's Native Son"...

There was a sad note from yesterday's event though.

My son and I were at the Corvette garage watching the Corvette teams changing to intermediate rain tires as it had started to rain pretty hard just before the car were to be grid. I noticed an old timer shuffling through the garage towards us as I was explaining to my son what the teams were doing and why they were doing it, and the old timer walks up to us and says "Good explanation" It was none other than Sam Posey. He was very frail, all bent over walking with a cane, and just looked sickly. After all, he is suffering from Parkinson's disease. Seeing this took me totally by surprise. After asking my son and I, and others around us, if we were having a good time, he went over to Danny Binks, the Corvette crew chief, and made a statement about being back in the US now (after LeMans) and having home field advantage. Then he walks away, very slowly. My wife, who was farther up the paddock at the time, told me later that "some old guy with a cane" was walking out of the garage and fell hard right in front of her. She went to help him up, and he refused the help, thanked her and climbed on a golf cart and was wisked away by people who were visibly upset. I showed her a picture of Sam Posey today, and she said that was him.

I've never met Sam Posey before, but I always remember what he looked like calling the Indy 500s back in the day, and he still does the Formula 1 intro for SpeedTV. It caught me totally off-guard when I realized it was him. It was still great to meet him, and greater still that he took the time to talk to my kid, as sick as the man is.

I guess I've never really seen what Parkinson's can do to people.

What a day! I didnt meet all the guys I wanted to, but being able to BS with Scott Sharp, Spenser Pompelly, Ron Fellows, Joey Hand, Lucas Luhr, Pat Long, Sam Posey, and a good 15 minutes with Butch Lietzinger made my day. I saw so many others that I couldnt talk to, or didnt recognize but knew they were someone, or some others that I could tell who didnt want to talk to anybody...They parked the cars on the grid for the start of the event, and then invited the whole park to come down to the track to look at the cars and talk to the drivers and teams and take pictures. I was walking, and talking to drivers, on the track! So cool... I'm so sunburnt, and buzzed! Brought home an empty cooler. Got alot of comments on my vintage IndyCar shirt. Plenty of IndyCar fans out there!

BTW, my camera is toast. I have no idea what happened to it, but I'd bet it got knocked off a table or something, not too happy about that. I had to buy a disposable at the last minute, and I let my kid take the pics. Dont expect too much Andy!

Sounds like a great time! I watched qualy yesterday. If that's an indication of the race, you're in for a real treat!
