Track Cutting
01:06 PM on May 01, 2007

I'm not going to name names. But at a recent race I participated in, a friend (and teammate) decided to watch one of the "aliens" during practice turn some hotlaps, maybe getting some tips on how to get around the track faster. Well as we watched him, we noticed he was cutting the chicanes with all 4 wheels. Ok so it was just practice. BUT, he even managed to get away with it in Qual.

He qual'ed well and finished well. I went back to the replay and watched him. To my astonishment, we was cutting nearly every lap, same places consistently and no one said a thing. Now 1) he never passed anyone because of it 2) even though he didn't pass, we all know cutting the chicanes will shave off precious time.

So if no one said anything does it mean it's ok? I'm not asking that this guy be labeled a cheater. In the end it's just a game. He's been at this league a while and I'm sure he's fast without 4 wheel cutting. But when do the rules apply????

(Each picture shows individual 4 wheel cutting, and this does not include the numberous borderline ones that show 3 wheels off the pavement.)

Stewards can't see everything and there is often not enough stewards to be able to observe a race. I think we should help them report such drivers so they would be penaltized.

But while racing here @R2P I never seen drivers breaking the rules like in your example.

Whew [wipes sweat from forehead] glad I never drove that car before, thought I was had.

Dmitry what you said....there is a Procedure in place for this already.

Filing a Protest

I would also send a link to that person to your video and suggest to him/her that he/she watch replays of themself to see wether or not they are cutting.

Kent is spot on: There is a procedure in place that people should follow if they see this type of behavior. However, I must say that the posting videos and screen shots is not that procedure and I am not fond of it. I will allow this one because it sparks a nice civil conversation

The Stewards are not going to catch all instances of cutting. In fact, many times there is only 1 or two stewards watching over a race, but 20+ drivers and 12+ corners a lap over a 50 lap race... math is against us.

I will admit that the veterans of R2P that have no track record of cutting can go unwatched for the most part. We focus our cameras on those that have a track record of cutting/punting/etc and this may allow the occasional veteran to get away with some bad behavior from time to time. It needs to be brought up to the Stewards so we can keep an eye on him/them with a closer eye.

But, yes by all means you should report this and it can be dealt with even after the results have been posted. in fact, being "caught" after the fact is a much larger penalty then being caught during the race.

I just want to emphasize that I'm not going to single out anyone nor am I trying to make a bad name for R2P. R2P is a great place to race! and meet drivers from all around the world. Every league is not perfect and I know that watching 20+ cars at one time with 1 or 2 race stewards is alot of work and it's impossible to watch every turn/chicane.

It's just frustrating for racers like me that typically run in the middle of the pack, that put so much time into practice, then see stuff like this go unnoticed. I would love to shave off 0.5 seconds to get a better qual position if it meant I could get away with a cut here and there..... but I won't.

We all have our "accidental" cuts from time to time, but this many in one race, IMO, is unacceptable.

Also, I am not going to be watching every replay of every race I enter. I came here to race and have fun, that's it. No more replays for me (except for post-race pics) As mentioned in my first post, this all came about merely as an "accident"- just happened to watch a hotlapper.

I am looking forward to Season 5! I retire from my soapbox!

Hey Chaz I don't think anyone took it the wrong way. Personally if I saw someone cutting that much in one event Tim would have gotten a PM from me about it...trust me.

Now we have the protest procedure which I think is great.

I would love to shave off 0.5 seconds to get a better qual position if it meant I could get away with a cut here and there..... but I won't.

As far as people getting away with cutting because they are faster, that is just not true. What Tim was saying is that most of the faster guys don't cut, or have not shown that tendancy and therefore are not watched until it comes to the attention of the stewards. The protest procedure is one way that it can come to their attention.

also, if you can, tell a race steward if you see this. in rFactor use a whisper command or jump on TS and tell us there. BTW Kent, are we feeling a bit guilty :-P

I know the event. I'm quite sure I know who is featured in the video. I just didn't see the point in raising up a stink about it.

Whatever happened in this video is ancient history. We're supposed to learn from history, so the lesson is that if you want direct input as to what's going on in an event you're in, you need to be on TS. Aside from GT-I, GT Historic and GT-O G2/G3 this season, no one is ever on TS. The stewards are right there to talk to, virtually face to face. Not to mention, you can let fellow competetors know your intentions on the track if everyone was on TS. WTF, now I sound like a broken record. Don't know what it takes to make people see the value of real time communication via TS.

Plus it's nice to ramble during the races with the stewards. Cuts down on the monotony of the engine.

I have been on teamspeak several times but either there is no one on or no one talking and since my headset gets a little uncomfortable over time I decided it isn`t worth it. I would like for everyone to use it though because it is harder to make friends without voice chat. I know people can be awfully intimidated by my awesome driving ability but if you were to talk to me you would see I`m just an average guy trying to have some fun.And in the spirit of fun, I think the guy who is cutting corners should be strung up by his balls. Also, every word is 100% serious with absolutely no humor thrown in whatsoever.
