Paying to race
12:48 PM on May 03, 2007

Smart move by T&T, the announcement they made about the membershipplans. And an expected one too. Running a website like this costs money and time spent on running it, so others can favor of it, also costs money. And maybe most important ... having a great idea/concept and making it a reality must be rewarded also. Only air costs nothing. So I don't have any problems with paying to race. I did that from the moment I signed up here. But please ... just call it like it is and don't start about not being Bill Gates and having families. Saying now is the time to really start to try making money with this great idea/concept would have gained my respect even more. I'll bet you've worked damn hard for it to make it come true. So I hope many members will sign up after a trialperiode and you two indeed become millioniars with it.

Well said George! I have been a contributor since Tm.Net and very satisfied with the job Tim did there and very pleased with the Job Tim & Todd have performed with placing all us sim races in a great atmosphere with a cool web site.

I have always paid and I dont mind paying for something I get value from and is also relatively cheap in terms on entertainment.

I will be frank though in voicing a fear I have that r2p would become a monopoly in sim racing. How could that happen? I think Todd's recent interview with autosimsport suggested that partnerships with software houses could be mutual beneficial. How long before we see sim - racing games, with their online play being written around r2p? Well maybe thats a good thing, as it makes it even easier for us to intergrate with r2p? The downside of r2p is that places I use to race at now have extremely low numbers, and thats will just worsen as r2p could become the only place to race, therefore a monopoly. As long as r2p is still what it is today then maybe thats not a problem. As long as it also stay relatively cheap!

I will buy the Premium packet for sure, but I hope the prices wont rise to like 20 dollars.

We should all be grateful to T&T for the will, time nad money they spent on R2P!

I welcome the change, like a lot of you I have been a paying member since the day R2P went live and was a contributing donater at TM.net.

I am hoping that this change will only improve the level of racing we have now, and I think we will see even more dedicated drivers as opposed to those that jump in a race, bomb T1 and quit.

I agree with Joco that the rates do not go up very much and not for a long time. It is justifiable at the current rates but approaching the $20 number would mean eclisping the $200 a year number and I do not think a lot of us are ready for that.

The problem for me is not paying for server time - I donate to the series I drive in - It's the structure of payment that has me reconsidering my intention to race here. I planned on running one series with races about every other week, thats all I have the time to commit to, but now that will cost me $4-5 per race. That's simply not as good a deal as if I were going to run 2 or three races per week. Obviously, management has done their homework, and they feel enough of the Basic members are hooked into enough racing to make it worth it to them. But I have to wonder how many there are like me, with a passion for the sport, but simply not enough time to make a flat rate structure worth it.

PS. I'd consider $1-1.50 fair for a well organized race with a field of 15+. And I'd gladly click pay pal to sign up for one.

Well there you have it, my point exactly. Management felt there were too many Barry's running 8 races a week for months on end without thinking "hey, maybe I should pay for this" and so now guys like me who spread what comparatively little racing they do around several servers/sims have to make a choice between 'Join the Monolith on their terms' and pay manditory monthlies or else patronize other venues and just continue donating for the privlege. Suck.

I would like to thank you all for your input in this matter. Both Todd and I do understand it is a tough subject and one that we do not have a solution for every specific person's need. However, Todd and I are more then happy to work out customized plans for anyone that comes to us with a request.

Chas, we had considered a plan to do one race at a time, but in all reality you would pay more going that route if you seriously did participate in any more then 1-2 race per month. I'd also like to point out that you have been a Basic member since December, though you have yet to participate in a single event. I think if you were to try some Race2Play events you may just realize that you too would run more then 2 races per month.

Ya, sorry, I don't mean to come off as a flamer or an angry ant, but I'm part of a team that formed at another League. You have your situation, and I'm just explaining ours: we all race other places, but had all joined here last season even tho only 2 raced consistantly. At least one of us was already a member in order to manage the team. There are eight registered members of Talon racing, I think at least 6 of us were planning on running in series' beginning at the end of May. I'd bet 2-3 end up sticking around now. So maybe you'll get 1 or 2 more short term sign-up up (whereas, eventually we all would have signed up out of guilt) you'll lose 3-4 occasional (but very strong) racers. It's unfortunate cus you had lured one of us here, and he brought in the rest of us, and now we're all taking a second look. I really can't speak for my teammates, and I can't say I or we won't be racing here, just that everyone is suddenly re-evaluating things on both sides of this thing.

Clearly, I'm not blaming you - you have to do what you have to do and I totally understand how frustrating it must be to see so many taking such liberties with your business plan - just lamenting the bad timing of an inevitability at a site this size. If this had happened 6 months from now, you probably would have gotten 3 more of us cus, ya, we would have been hooked. The only thing I am bummed about is not running last season, so I can't even use 30 days to see if I like the place. I'll keep this place in mind, but it's not as close to the top of my list as it looked like it would be. Sorry.
