6 Months And A Day
02:18 AM on Jul 24, 2007

Yesterday was 6 months to the day I signed up here at R2P, and to say I've enjoyed myself would be an understatement of grande proportions. As I had only owned rFactor and GTR2 for a few months I didn't know what to expect (bah, who needs real people? That's why they make AI. What's the big deal?). As they say, the couple times I went online on the public servers just didn't make me want to play online. But there was a nice writeup in AutoSimSport, and while the PCC mod was old news to everyone else, it was new to me and I loved it, and I saw there was a weekly PCC race here.
So what the hell, I sign up and read all the rules. Entered the race, finished not last (actually 11th, right behind Chris Chappell I just noticed! Ha ha, still chasin' that bastid), and that was all she wrote.
Next day I paid my one year in advance Premium membership.

I've entered less races than some but more than most, tried nearly every class there is to try, and spent a lot of time being a dimwit and floundering (nothing like learning the hard way). Somehow I got an invite to one of the top ranked teams, and figured what the hell, didn't know what the online team thing was about, but it was worth a shot too for a new experience. Then I had to get a lot better a lot faster so I wasn't dead weight and an embarrassment. I'm still trying to be as fast as the rest of the FMMS guys.

I've never run a single race against the AI since. Not one. In the 2% of the time I may practice offline there will be AI drivers just so there's traffic, but when Tim puts up a practice server to hell with that, I go online.

It's the people that make it so enjoyable, and that's the biggest surprise for me. I'm not really that much of a people-person. Now I (we) just need to figure out a way to get more people on TeamSpeak for the social experience, more people to post for more viewpoints, and a way to get more folks here to enjoy the goodness so we can have 30 car rF grids and 24 car GTR2 grids.

It's odd to say this is one of my "hobbies" now. My wife and friends knew it, it just took me a while to realize it. I've put a variety of people in my cockpit, from social friends to musician friends to car & motorcycle racer friends (my wife likes to entertain). Some thought it was fun, some thought it was silly, but 2 stand out as saying they would never do that again. Why? Because they walked away with their eyes crossed & head spinning, knowing that if they ever tried it again they would never stop, and they didn't have the time, space, or understanding enough wives to start down this path :-)

I am very blessed to lead a full and interesting life, and this just adds one more log to the fire. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would compile any race wins, or look over to the right of my Driver's Page and see any Track Records. Never. I was just having fun. You know if this dope can do it, anybody can.

This is not meant for bragging or ego-fluffing. This is for my personal record only as we don't (yet) have historical tracking.
At 6 months:

Overall rank 6.725 (12th) - Sports Car 6.491 - Touring Car 6.612 - Open Wheel 7.085

Wow Tommy's story is just about a mirror image of mine with the exception of the winning part LOL. I even started at or about the same time you did. I was also taken by the sence of community here at R2P and the Team Speak just added to that feeling. I am not sure why more drivers are not on TS. I think if they were to try it they would see what a help it really is. Tommy G.

Great post Tommy, and I too have been around here for more or less the same amount of time (no wins though....) and I came here as well after reading in AutoSimSport (as well as a friend at BDRMotorsports site where I was racing Meganes). I love everything about r2p.
As far as TeamSpeak, I use it from time to time. I would use it a lot more, but-- I am embarassed to say this-- I find it hard to concentrate when I am out on the track and there is a lot of speaking going on! I am sure I could log off when i exit the pits, but at the same time I like to be connected because sometimes I want to speak when I am practicing to teammates etc. So, I am always in a bit of a bind. I find that if I have to focus though, I better turn it off.

Tommy is one of the real gentlemen at Race2Play. He made me and many others feel welcome when we first got here. He will share set-ups and other advice freely, knowing that he is really faster on the track know matter what set-up you have. So lift a glass of your favorite beverage to Mr. Christian!

Now about Mr. Bayless in the Panoz....

Diddos TC. I got here in December. I guess I came here because I felt like I wanted to support the effort Tim was putting into developing a SimRacing community. I had been watching the goings on between him and the FIR$T racing fellas and I was all for the underdog getting a break. So I was all for putting up some dough into membership to help this happen. Two things surprised me. First, Tim didn't need any help. That boy took out his sling shot and went after the giant. The second surprise was that he had really developed a top notch racing community. R2P far exceeds anything I could have imagined. But just think about it. This is only about 9 months old. Its just an infant. I think as long as Tim and Todd can afford to invest in R2P it will get better and better and we will see new features and benefits. For any of you fellas who have not ponied up the dough get on board. It isn't free to run servers and guys who run them have to pay rent and buy groceries just like the rest of us. So lets all do our best to support R2P. Lets see....have I digressed yet. Hummm.....Did I just hijack another thread?

Ah Tommy,we joined up fairly close and i remember some close races with you until you improved and i didn't.I think i picked up on an error in the stats you posted, such as 173 events not 151[151 is results?].Anyway,i will have to start doing some rfactor events or you will catch and pass me.
