UNFINISHED BUSINESS!
"UNFINISHED BUSINESS" - Racing Report >
I departed DFW on "AA481" on Wednesday 05, 2007, the trip itself was fine except the 1 hour delay due to bad weather in Mexico City, it was expected to be rainy and windy due to the recent hurricanes that hit the "Mexican Republic" that week... I arrived late at night and my uncle Francisco Perea took me straight to the shop to take a look at the car with the new wheels... I was a little anxious for this race as last March we competed in the 24 Hours of Mexico in the same track and finished second place after leading the class in first place for over 7 hours until I lost a "Wheel" in T-5 costing us a lengthy pit stop and the win, in fact this was not the only time we lost a wheel, during the whole race of 24 hours and 825 laps we lost 2 wheels and damaged to the right ball joint and axle, this was caused by driving over the curbs from the 2 "Rally" co-drivers for our team; so this added 3 "Unscheduled" pit stops for the team. I checked the car and I was really excited to the changes made since March, we talked for a while and headed to his home to rest. The next day I woke up a little late as I had been training or 1 month straight in the gym to get back my stamina level; I had temporarily retired from sim-racing and actually spent some time with my family racing go-karts nearby Fort Worth, TX. So, I literally spent that day in bed resting and watching tv, when I got tired of that I went to the shop to help adding new "Fog lights" to the No. 636 A Central - R2P car and replaced the original light bulbs with "High Density Xenon" lights as we were expecting fog during the weekend. We all including the mechanics finished late that night adjusting several things in both cars as we would not have time to do anything at the track as we wanted to spent Friday all day practicing as qualifying session was to be held on Saturday September 08. Unfortunately due to the bad weather, there were some accidents on the way to the track in Amozoc, Puebla which is about 125 miles from Mexico City. We arrived around 4:00 p.m., which was 3 hours later than expected, so immediately we started unpacking and fixing the pits, we sent the car to "Inspection/Scrutiny" and we were told to correct the position of the lights for the numbers, which costs us another practice session of the 5 scheduled. On practice 4 both Francisco Perea and Arturo Mora Jr. went out to do laps to check for any possible issues, and everything went well... :) The weather was cold for a time of the year when is supposed to be sunny and hot...On our way to the track we had rain and the car got a little dirty so in between practice sessions 4 and 5 we washed the car....Ehhh???...Yes, crazy right!!!...5 minutes to the start of P-5 I was getting ready to get in the car, not before looking one more time to the weather in my laptop...The screen showed T-Storms approaching in the next 5 minutes, so I went out and by minute 14 it started raining, to my surprise the handling of the car was somewhat affected, but not much due to the wetness of the track, I was 7 seconds off my previous PB from March... I continued to practice, but the session ended 10 minutes earlier due to the poor visibility. I went back to pits and we all continued to share notes about the car and track, all this while it was pouring down rain... We packed and left everything ready for the next big day of qualifying and start of the race, but to our surprise we could not get out of the track...The tunnel to get from the outside to the track was flooded >{... All drivers, cars, trucks and the rest of the fans were unable to exit via their cars, so we had to leave everything inside, carry our racing bags and cross around the track in order to exit the track and request taxi cabs....This was a good day for them $$$ :)!!!...I would never thought that the newest track in Mexico was built without and emergency exit !!! Argghh!!!! Anyways, we went to out hotel after waiting for 1 hour in the rain and cold, straight to the showers in order not to get sick, and finally to get some rest...
Saturday September 09, 2007:
Early in the morning we all woke up, ate breakfast and got ready to go to the track to practice in what looked to be a nice day, it was "Sunny in Philadelphia", I mean in Puebla, the sky had opened, but the weather advisor reported scattered T-Storms after 7:00 p.m. We were lucky not to have rain for the 3 scheduled practice sessions, but the weather made the race director advanced the qualifying session an hour earlier, just when we thought we were going to have a dry qualifying session it started to rain, I had never in my whole racing career qualified during these weather conditions to my surprise we took Pole Position, even though our car was slower in the dry against the GT-2 class we were able to steal the pole as they were slower than us, because the slid too much in the oval section....What an amazing moment!!! \o/
Green Flag: We were all set in the grid and in the drivers meeting the race director announced that we were to do 2 outlaps and then a rolling start, but the weather forecast was coming to reality as it started raining real har making it difficult to see at night, some cars had defroster and other not, it reminded me of "Champcar's Surfer's Paradise in 2002", well not that bad, but it still reminded me.... :) After 15 minutes, we were given the word to to continue the race and again we did 2 out-laps, the pace car lights were off and the "Green Flag" dropped.... All cars to T-1 with no incidents, everyone made it thought, and the racing began, after one hour into the race the first "Yellow Flag" appeared when one car tried to ride the curbs and slid and hit the wall, fortunately the driver scaped unhurt, just a little shaken but fine....Close to the 2 hours in the race we were in first place of the Fork Super Cup class and the GT-2 class, Neon T-4 class and the 1600 Chevys class at this point we were all still in the lead lap...The end of my first stint was coming to an end, but with 2 laps to my scheduled pit stop I was given a "Black Flag", I was like Ehhh!!!, What happened!!!, I was told to come in 1 lap before my pit stop, I exited the car and my uncle Francisco Perea was next at the wheel... I was still confused about the black flag when I noticed that they had shut down the engine, but my uncle was still getting in the car and get ready...I climbed over the wall and on eof the race marshals told me that I had lost the power of the taillights due to a short-circuit in the dashboard cause by a loose wire that got wet. I was frustrated, we lost the lead and 4 laps fixing the taillights, but the worst part came when we were told by the race director that we were going to be penalized for 5 minutes !!! There was nothing I could do and Mr. Arturo Mora came to me and told me "You did a great job by not loosing the lead during the rain", his words conforted me, but I was still angry and sad at the same time...After a few minutes Mr. Mora said, " Omar, go take a nap as we have a long night and we need to get back the lead", so I did... I put on a jacket as the temperature had dropped to 59 degrees F and I was starting to feel chilly... I went to the rest area in the pits and took a 3 1/2 hour nap... Woke up and my uncle had gained 3 laps from the field putting us 1 lap from the lead lap... My next race stint was coming, but Mr. Arturo said that he wanted me to finish the race, so he told me to go back to sleep and that we would wake me up to do the final stint...So, I did... I really wanted to rest to be fresh and ready for what it came to be the best time I've had in a race car, not forgetting that Arturo Mora Jr. and Francisco Perea had done an outstanding job by gaining positions back and put the car on the lead lap close to the front... I went to the "Ambulance" to get checked for my last stint, this is mandatory to all drivers before entering their race cars every time to go back racing...SO I was cleared, was given my report that you have to turn in before you enter the track and the end of the pits exit...
The Final Hours: I exited the pits and 15 minutes into my stint the track started to get really foggy, first slight, then it got really heavy making hard for us to see, so the pace car came out and I was behind the leader...the caution lasted for 15 minutes, but 5 minutes before the leader decided to enter the pits giving me the lead once again....This was awsome!!! I was in the lead again in a foggy environment, something I had never experience while racing, during the next 3 laps I was finding again my markers in the turns, the light s of the pace car were out and the green flag dropped again, I held the lead for the next 2 laps, when I outbraked T-1, not bad but enough to loose the lead against the GT-2 car (VW Beetle), so I spent the next 30+ minutes trying to pass him, but the track was almost dry and I was thinking to myself that we were going to finish behind the GT-2 class in 2nd. place, when all of the sudden we had another yellow flag, I did not see any cars off track or accidents, but a few minutes later again the fog got real dense, making it impossible to see, even though the sun was coming out it was the perfect combination for this hard to see fog (wet track, humidity and sun)....The pace car came out and I was in second when the No. 74 car entered the pits giving us back the lead in front of the GT-2 classes, Super Cups and the 1600 Chevys...I spent the next 23 laps leading in "Yellow Flag" condition, I looked at the clock hanging at the bridge of the "Start/Finish" line and it showed only 40 some minutes to the end, all I needed to do was make no mistakes, and bring the car home...Easy to say, but it was hard to do as the pressure of finishing in 1st. place was taking a toll on my body as I started sweating and shaking a little bit, I really wanted to finish first in class, while getting to the finish I started thinking about the promise I made in the iDT, R2P forums and to all my family and friends about bringing 1st. place home, when all of the sudden I was shown the whiote flag... "Just one lap, I said, just one!!!" I kept talking to myself, like I was crazy...lol...When all of the finish we were shown the checkered flag !!! I started screaming "Yes! Yes! - We did it !!!" Oh men !!! What a feeling, the most amazing feeling a driver can go thought when they show the checkered flag... I did my in-lap enter the pits and all was noise, applause, and the team coming to me, I climbed out of the car and I started hugging literally every single soul at the track... No time to do everything, it was fast and slow at the same time...When I finally put my feet on earth I immediately went in search of my cell phone in my racing bag and I called Tim McArthur (R2P) and Pierro Pelonero (iDT Racing Simulations), and told them the great news, Tim words were "Congratulations Omar!!! I knew it"...Pierro said "Way to go dude, Awesome, just awesome", he then said "I will immediately post in our forum, sh*t, my pc crashed...lol"....That was a funny moment!...
Sorry for this boring and lengthy post, but I wanted to share it with you...
My family, Tim, R2P members, Pierre, iDT members, my friends, my R2P team (iDT RS), my sponsors iDT Racing Simulations, Race2Play (R2P), Koncepto Extremo, Sparco, Bell, Carbonex, Azteca GFX, Logitech, TrackIR, Dell, MOMO, Perea-Mora Racing Team y OGRacing Team, and everyone else that I forget to mention here, thank you for your support...This is a moment that I will cherish forever!!!
Best!
OG \o/

RACE2PLAY.COM SPONSORS SUPER CUP CAR AT 12 HOURS OF MEXICO

ERIE, CO (30 Aug 2007) - Race2Play.com is excited to sponsor one of its own, Omar Gonzalez, and the Perea-Mora Racing Ford Ka for the 12 Hours of Mexico endurance race Sept. 8-9 at Autodromo Miguel E. Abed in Amozoc, Puebla.

"I have been racing at Race2play.com for almost a year, and it has been a great training tool for me and many other professional drivers," Gonzalez said. "Thanks to my participation in the rF World Challenge at Race2Play, I was able to train for longer stints, which is what I needed for real life endurance racing."

Gonzalez took home a championship in the rF World Challenge, a multiclass sim racing series at Race2Play with events lasting more than two hours each. He joined the Perea-Mora Racing team for the real-life 24 Hours of Mexico race in March, copiloting the car to a second-place finish after three unscheduled stops for mechanical issues cost the team the win.

"We are pleased to sponsor Omar Gonzalez and the Super Cup car. Omar's been racing at Race2Play this past year and proven himself a champion already," Race2Play cofounder Tim McArthur said.

"We're proud to be providing the sport and its competitors a service that's not only valued as race driver training, but as entertainment as well."

Race2Play.com organizes the Official Online Racing Sanctioned by the National Auto Sport Association, and counts among its members amateur and professional drivers from the ranks of NASA, SCCA, Karting, Formula Renault, Formula 3, Champ Car and Grand Am. Race2Play programs mirror those of real-world motorsport bodies, from online High Performance Driver Training to championship points series.

Gonzalez began his racing career in 1998 in the Formula 3000 International series, and took up Karting after moving to America. He began sim racing online in 2005 and joined Race2Play in January 2007. Gonzalez also is a member of the sim modding group iDT.

"Thank you to Race2Play for allowing me to carry the Race2Play banner in the upcoming 12 Hours of Mexico," Gonzalez said. "I'm really looking forward to this event, and will do my best to bring that first place home."
