So, at work on friday, lots of things happened. One of them was the GM telling me to fix something that wasn't broken. She thought it was broken because it wasn't doing what she expected it to do, but in reality, it was doing exactly what it was supposed to do. Makes a lot sense doesn't it? heheh. At work I am the SysAdmin, we have 8 servers, one of which is an IBM ISeries (AS/400). One program it was running was working as it should, but the GM insisted it was broken and that I fix it. I did get it 'fixed' knowing all along that in doing so, something else would inevitably break. But this was uncharted territory for us, so I didn't know what would break, just that something would, and something did. I had to call in the techs from corporate to fix the program, but they had to remote in to the servers, one at a time, and reconfigure them, which of course took some time to do. But they got the boxes reconfigured (they run Linux) and the program was running the way the GM wanted. Only problem is, she doesn't realize that those techs will have to reconfigure them again, back to the way they were originally. At the end of the day I am in the GM's office and I bring up the subject of the reprogramming of the servers, and she blows up at me 'We lost a lot of money today and I am holding you personally responsible for it!'. There was no way I could explain anything to a hot head like that, so I left. Today I go to the office and the Assist GM is walking out of my office and asks 'What are you doing here?'. Huh? I ask what do you mean? He says 'You are suspended indefinitely'. No chance to explain anything to him, he just walked off after that, what a jerk! So I just finished sending an email to both the GM and AGM and to 6 or 7 people at corporate headquarters, including the CEO. I gave them a complete description of everything that happened friday, and am now most likely jobless. Oh well. I actually feel like a heavy weight has been lifted off, just by losing this job. Only real drawback is my wife is also looking for a new job, she was one of the unlucky First Magnus Financial employees to get layed-off last week. |
That sucks, Chip! :( I hope there is some intelligence in upper management and after reading your letter will bring you in for your side of the story. Best of luck to you and the missus on getting new (and more enjoyable) jobs!

Follow my philosophy....."I was looking for a job when I found this one...." Sometimes it is hard to imagine how people, especially in what sounds like a somewhat technical organization, get into positions of authority. But hey, it sounds like you did what she told you, even after giving her fair warning. It's like water off of a duck's back in my view. As one of my favorite bands of all times, REO Speedwagon said, "Roll with the Changes" Good Luck! tks,
Tough luck Chip. Hope everything will work out for you.
Chip, sorry to hear you your job situation and your wifes as well. I hope everything works out to where corporate understands the situation and comes to the conclusion that you should not be held accountable for the need of reprogramming the servers. Once back on board I would look for another job and then not give any notice other than giving the bird and dropping off your company credentials while leaving for the new company, they deserve nothing more. Sounds like a typical corporation atmosphere always looking for a way to pass along the fall guy. Best of luck in you search,

Hang in there Chip. Sounds like your supervisor boss is a real spineless cover your own ass and hang others out to dry type of person.
Hang in there Chip, my wife is in your same position. GL
Wow! That's got to be stress-full. AS400's are a bitch and it sounds like your boss is one too! My job has been stress-full too lately - sometimes wish I could hop in a porsche and race away from it permantly.
perfect discription of a women in power! good luck Chip, i dunno how the job market is 100 miles south of here, but i hope it's good. Maybe look for a job in the phoenix area too, there has to be something.
I'm sure you'll find a better job. Changes often brings better things :) Best of luck to you and your wife.
Hang on in there Chip, everything will turn out OK eventually. |
