Race report
CART: Surfers Paradise on Jul 26, 2009
Car: Champcar '95. Class: CART 95. Start: 10. Finish: 9. Laps: 10.

Practice: All this week I was having some rear end stability problems. Last night made a change that was a huge improvement. The car was capable of running upper 26's.

Qualifying: Unfortunately I had I few errands that I still had to run, but got back in time to do half an out lap. The game put me 10th on the grid.

Race: Being in the back I was being really careful, and letting the tires come up to proper temp and pressure.

Lap 1: Taking the green someone checked up, and I had to stand on the brakes, causing me to lose a spot before the first chicane. Still behind the same car, I patiently looked for a way by, but held back. Then in the forth chicane he hit the wall, and I missed him by millimeters. Now there are several cars on my tail, and I still have no tire heat.

Lap 2: I had quickly closed in on the car that passed me at the start. Going into the first chicane I was right on his gearbox, but unable to make a move. So I backed up to keep space in case he crashed. This allowed the cars behind to be right on my tail. Going into the first left one of them had a run, and I let him pass me. On exit I got a little wheel spin, so checked my mirrors to see the location of the other car. Seeing how far back he was, and due to the location on the circuit I knew that a pass could not be successfully completed. Unfortunately he thought differently, and dove in hitting my left rear and pushing my car into the barrier. This left me with a flat right rear tire and very bent suspension. I limped around to the pits, watching him drive into the distance.

Lap 3: After a 61 second stop, I am now two laps down. Not knowing how much of the car the team was able to fix I turned back the fuel to get a feel. Once I built some heat it was very apparent that either the right rear damper and/or the rear sway bar was broken, and this was causing the car to bounce around under braking, and be extremely unpredictable.

End: With my race completely over, I said screw it, turned up the fuel and tried to turn the fastest lap I could. On my second hot lap the car bounced into the wall exiting the second chicane. Race Over!

As a final thought, I would like to thank the guy that ended my race, as I was able to use that time to complete a few extra chores around the house. In the future it would be great if it could happen earlier in the week. Then I can just pack up the trailer, giving me free time to do other things.
