I will be driving out to AZ to pick up my son and his Jeep and tow it back to VA for the Summer. I was thinking about towing my SM out and entering the race at PIR on May 5-6 since I will be out there anyway. I spoke with one of the organizers and they told me that there are only about 2-3 SMs that race out there. Now on the East Coast, we get about 20-30 SMs at each race. Racing with one or two other cars is not that much fun. Is road racing dieing off out in AZ or is this just a temporary situation while racers feel out the combination of NASA and CRA?

I haven't made it up to Phoenix for anything in a long time (I'm in Tucson). I'd love to do some NASA stuff but my wife won't allow me to take our new Mazda 3 on the track, so I'll have to wait till I get my own car - looking for a series 1 MGB , but that won't happen till our house is built so I have a garage to put it in (later this year).

I have a 93 Miata I run in NASA TT, probably not as quick as a SM but good fun either way.

Hope to see you there!

Spec 944 seems to be the big class for NASA in Arizona...maybe you should see about finding someone out there to rent one of those from? It would save you from hauling the Miata out there, and would give you better racing than a (bizarrely under-populated) SM race with only 2 or 3 cars.

I am considering offering prize money for SM that would require a certain # of racers, maybe that will work.

WOW it has been a long time! I did come to AZ and raced the SCCA race at Firebird May 5-6. I dorve over to PIR for the NASA event and was going to race there on Sunday but there was only 1 other Miata I saw and he was doing a HPDE event instead of racing. What gives with SM out there in AZ? Even the SCCA race only had 5 other cars!! Here on the East Coast we usually have 40-50 cars in SM, even in the NASA races we get 30-40 SMs. In SCCA we have SM and SSM, they both attract near limits for the tracks. We had 87 cars at VIR back in May. see start: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpw4jHGp_VE I am 3rd in this video!!
