Just seen Windows XP Service Pack 3 has been released and was wondering if I should install it or not. So I'm just waiting to see from the plethora of computer savvy individuals here if it messes with any of our sim's we use here.

The changes I've read include the following:

Network Access Protection compatibility: Announced years ago, this feature allows Windows XP machines to interact with the NAP feature in Windows Server 2008. This functionality is built into the RTM version of Windows Vista as well.

Product Key-less install option: As with Windows Vista, new XP with SP3 installs can proceed without entering a product key during Setup.

Kernel Mode Cryptographics Module: A new kernel module that "encapsulates several different cryptographic algorithms," according to Microsoft.

"Black hole" router detection algorithm: XP gains the ability to ignore network routers that incorrectly drop certain kinds of network packets. This, too, is a feature of Windows Vista.

I've been running sp3 for a while now and no problems with GTR2 or rfactor.

I think I read somewhere a few weeks ago that it also implements some DX10 features? Don't quote me.

I do know sp3 has driver issues. Seems some non certified drivers you allowed to install before has been replaced with Windows drivers.

I have one PC with that problem as soon as sp3 was installed.

a small tid bit worth consideration...More dubious is the Windows Product Activation update, which makes the XP installation process more Vista-like. This means you’ll no longer be forced to input your Windows product activation key during installation (although you’ll still have to do so within 30 days or your OS will stop working).

However, it also means Windows XP will be tracking your hardware configuration in much the same way that Vista does, which could lead to your computer being disabled in the event that you change out fundamental components such as your motherboard or processor.

So uh.... whats the benefit of even installing SP3?

sound's like a couple bug fixes and new components that I will probably never use.

I installed it the other day, and the first thing that happened was Internet explorer crashed immediately after opening ... Uninstalled right away. But have just reformatted, and want to give it another go ...
