I just started experimenting with the new mod and have an observation/question. The cockpit view, which I normally use,
seems too low and far away to be comfortable...for me, at least. As a result I am using the hood view. Is there any way to bring the cockpit closer?

Yep, set the default field of view (settings->display) to around 50
