Ok, its my 44th next week and my wife wants to get me a new gfx card, now I've been sat on my arse for 3 months waiting for the new cards to come out and now they are here I dont have a clue which way to jump.

So which one would you guys recommend?

GTX280
or
HD 4870

I will buy the new card based on your comments within the next 24hrs, so remember I know where you live! ;-)

It looks at this point that you can get 2 4870 ($320 US) for the price of 1 280 ($650 US). Ouch. The choice would be easy for me.

Have you maybe considered looking at the 9800GTX+ instead? Or, if you have a current Intel chipset, maybe a pair of 4870's?

All of these cards get good reviews from what I can find, so that really makes it tough.

8800GTS is still a fantastic card. Have their prices gone down since new cards are out?

Had just gotten an OC'ed 8800GT but same day it arrived I got the opportunity to try out a HD4850. After doing some benchmarking I promptly returned the nvidia card.
That card is just nifty, I was sold instantly. Everything I throw at it it takes without a sweat, beat the OC'ed GT in everything I tried and that was with a good margin too.
Its close to overkill in GTR2, you can practically play in 2048x1536 with MAX bling bling effects.
Not a fanboy but been happy with ATI for over 5 years now so was nice to stay at that camp.

My recommendation is get the 4850 or 4870, the nvidias are too expensive and even the new 9800GTX+ doesnt really change that fact. Wont even get started on the GTX2xx's, they are just waste of money for a in best case a little extra performance.
Wind's been blowing nvidia way for some time but now its changed like it has done for many past years.

I have a HD.. Awesome... I am going to connect it to my 46" HDTV as soon as I buy the cable.

For the fun of it I connected the S-Video to the component adapter for the moment. Not the best but once I get the proper cable I will have HD Racing lol ;)
