17 Jul 2009 — Starting from back in the field, Pablo Martinez picked off seven positions to finish in first place for his 60th career victory in the MiniRX: Croft #2 in Round 2 of the Minicross Summer Series.
Martinez spent the majority of 12 laps total leading James Linton after originally challenging and passing him on the third lap, coming from as many as six spots back. Martinez cleared Linton and into first place on lap 3, and defended it against pressure by Linton another 10 laps toward the finish.
Martinez remains in the lead of the standings, five points ahead of Matt Sotomayor. Martinez has two starts and led 26 of his 28 laps while taking the win twice.
The momentous victory for Martinez came on his second outing in the MiniRX. Martinez has taken the MiniRX to Croft RX two times, and this was his second victory there.
A whisker-thin 0.131 seconds separated James Linton ahead of Matt Sotomayor at the checkered flag for Linton to take second place.
Linton traded positions with Alfredo Chiva in a close battle for second starting midway through, running within a bumper of each other over a stretch of eight laps. Linton ran the majority leading Chiva after originally being targeted by him on the second lap. After losing the spot on lap 4, Linton cleared Chiva and into second place on lap 6, and defended it against pressure by Chiva another four laps toward the pulse-pounding finish with Sotomayor.
Linton remains in fourth in the standings, now tied in points with fifth's Eduardo Perojo following Perojo's fifth-place finish. Linton has two starts and led two of his 27 laps while finishing as high as second.
Matt Sotomayor captured third place.
Sotomayor swapped leads multiple rounds with Alfredo Chiva in a lengthy and unrelenting battle for third from the middle stages, running within a bumper of each other over a stretch of 12 laps. Sotomayor spent equal parts leading Chiva after catching and passing him on lap 6. After losing the spot on lap 8, Sotomayor cleared Chiva for the second time and into third place on lap 11, and defended it against pressure by Chiva the remaining four laps to the conclusion.
Sotomayor remains in second in the standings, five points behind Pablo Martinez. Sotomayor has two starts and finished as high as second.
Minicross Summer Series moves on to Round 3 later this day at Croft RX. The series has 13 drivers competing for points in the championship.
Alfredo Chiva won fourth place.
Chiva wrestled the advantage back and forth with Matt Sotomayor in a lengthy and unrelenting battle for third from the middle stages, running within a bumper of each other over a stretch of 12 laps. Chiva ran equal parts leading Sotomayor after initially being targeted by him on the first lap. Ultimately Chiva lost the spot on lap 11 and settled into fourth the few laps running to the finish.
Chiva remains in third in the standings, two points behind Matt Sotomayor. Chiva has two starts and finished as high as third.
Eduardo Perojo took fifth place.
After starting fourth, Perojo gained his way to third and then dropped to 12th early in the running. Perojo spent nearly equal parts of 13 laps total leading Sergio Sousa after catching and passing him on lap 8. Perojo passed Sousa and into fifth place on lap 8, and controlled it the remaining half-dozen laps to the finish.
Perojo remains in fifth in the standings, now tied in points with fourth's James Linton following Linton's second-place finish. Perojo has two starts and finished as high as fifth.
