Pacific G2: Valencia

Gave another podium finish away with my horrible pit stops & also ran out of fuel with 1 to go.

Yet another awesome race @ Valencia!

I had a great start but had to back out as a Bimmer & Porsche cut me off. I probably would have moved up quite a bit if I could have manouvered around. T1 was clean tonight, at least for my sake. I found myself in a train of my teammates Daniel and Barry. I was in the back behind Barry. I was quicker than he was but I just couldn't make a pass stick. He and Daniel bumped and we all spun. I think Daniel made it out okay seeing his finish. Barry and I went nose to tail again after loosing about 8s. I finally passed him and made a gap. The car was great so I extended my first stint intending to have a short middle stint.

I had a longish 1st stop as the damn Porsche wouldn't start AGAIN! This is the 3rd or 4th time for this. I headed out and found myself trailing Tom and Barry. I only took 2 tires so the car was twitchy towards the end of my stint. I just didn't have enough to get by either of them. I wound up having a lazy spin in the chicane and lost 10s. I pitted two laps later exiting with Tom on my arse. At this point, I'm a lap down to him so I let him by in traffic. I stuck to his bumper until he pitted.

Tom came out of his pit about 2s behind me. This was the beginning of an epic battle to the finish. We quickly caught Les after he made a mistake entering the S/F straight. I passed him and left Tom to battle for position. After Tom got by, he quickly caught me as my fronts wear giving out. We traded paint for a few laps before I lost the front end in T1 and went a bit wide. I now find myself on Tom's bumper again! We battled hard for a few more laps and I got him going into the last turn with just 3 laps left. On the following lap, Tom had a great run on me down the front straight starting the last lap and was right on my bumper. As I said, my fronts were wearing down (I already had the worn out sign from my pit) and was now braking earlier. Tom tapped me and sent me sliding through the infield grass. I wound up back on the track pointing the right way so I downshifted and kept going. Tom got right back on my bumper. I knew his only shot at me was exiting the last turn and was concentrating on making a good exit. Which I did. So did Tom. Actually, his was a bit better as he wound up beating me by .039s at the line!

That was a fun race for the first 15 laps especially. I joined the room with the Seat, no setup and only time for about 5 laps practice. Tweaked and tweaked but the car was just crap still when the room went to Qual session.

I managed a 3rd on the grid which considering how bad the car was I was happy with 3rd.

Got a great start and pulled up even with Tom O but with the cold tires and the punt rule I wasn't going to take any chances. So I spent the next 15 laps trying to pressure Tom into a mistake, but he was having none of that. For the most part our cars were equal but it looked like his gearing was better since he was getting off the corners a lot better than I making it impossible to challenge for a pass.

Lap 15 he pitted and I finally got the lead and tried to lay down some nice laps before my stop, but the tires were shot and my next lap was almost a second slower than my best so I pitted the next lap.

Rejoined in 4th and when the first round of stops were completed I had about a 13 second lead. Not sure what happened to Tom, must have taken some fuel on his stop or something. Anyway the rest of the race was pretty boring with no one to race and I just brought it home for the win.

well, would have been a fun race until the "drive though" happened. I used to be about 5 seconds off Kent's pace (NGT race last week), and I've closed it up to a couple of tenths (and managed to edge him for 2nd by a few hundreths). since I am new, though (that was my 4th race), when I went in to serve my drive though, it forced me into the pit stall, then I panicked and hit esc, and it DNF'd me. glad I knew how to do drive throughs....

can anyone help me out with pit strategy too? I'm kinda lost as what to do. we never pitted in karts, so this is new territory for me.

Whew! That was the greatest race I've ever had here on R2P! I have to thank Garrett Diduck and Jeff Stibling for their awesome sportsmanship and great racing.

I started from pole after a lap I literally squeezed into the session. I got a better start than I expected, and then Kent Welker and I had a little bit of good racing swapping 1st and 2nd once or twice before we settled into a good pace, me in 1st, him in 2nd. We ran that way all the way 'til my first scheduled stop, about 20 minutes into the race. I was obviously the only one in that front group who took tires that first stint, because I came out in like 15th, and never saw 1st, 2nd, or 3rd again. I began to get a little frantic and started pushing the car really hard to get back as much time as I could. I had changed my front tires, replacing softs with softs, but kept the hard rear tires I started with. I was having a bit of trouble gripping coming out of some of the corners, but that seemed to work out okay. I was back up to 4th after the pitstops sorted themselves out, and then the second pitstops came around, and I had to take all new tires. The front softs were worn, and the double-stinted rear hards were absolutely gone as well, so I took softs on the front and mediums on the rear and went off. I began on this crazy pace, turning laps consistantly under my quali time. I wound up right behind Jeff Stibling and he seemed to be struggling with his car, but he was still on pace with me. We raced for a good long time, and I think the pressure got to him and he bobbled in the last corner. Then came Garrett. We had a hell of a race, nose to tail for a good long time, I finally got by in turn 1 I believe and led him for a while, then he got back by me in a beautiful pass into the last turn. I tried a outside-inside move on him but he defended nicely and I had to wait. Then I guess he wanted to defend turn, and broke early, or I was very late on the brakes, but either way I hit him, and we both went flying. Luckily neither of us left the track and we both came back on in the same order and went right back at it. We had quite a lot of side-by-side action that last lap, including me pounding on his rear bumper through turn 6 (sorry, Garrett :s). We came through the chicane single file and I had only one chance left to pass him. He defended the inside and I swung wide and cut back in, and it worked like a charm. I pulled up along side and nailed the throttle and pulled by, ever so slightly, for 4th (now 3rd I see) And we crossed the finish pounding doorhandles. All in good fun :)

Sorry about the bumping, by the way, Garrett, I watched the replay and hit you a few more times than I would have liked to see me do. I was pretty dissappointed in myself, for taking you out especially in turn 1, but I'm glad you agree that rubbin's racin'. I'm going to post a video of our last lap after it's uploaded to YouTube so you can all enjoy it, it's mighty good TV :p

Wondering just how close the race for the last podium spot was? Well, you get to watch it right here. You'll find out what happened in turn one if you read Garret's and my race reports, pretty much just a racing incident I think we decided. And don't mind the checkered flag waving, you'll see that the first time by the marshall. I'm sure it was just a glitch in the replay.

BTW, sorry there's no sound. I don't know how to get sound through the game using Fraps. All you hear is me talking to Tim McArthur...sorry!

Well, after my win in the Welcome race, I followed up with compete disaster in this one! That's racing.
After having run as high as fourth before first pitstops my race was ruined by my making an absolute disaster out of the pitstops. I had to do 3 instead of 2 (too short on fuel after second), had the wrong tires on, turned engines on and off at the wrong time several times in each stop. I have to figure out why I make such a mess of them. Each pit stop was a nightmare that took twice as long! Oh well, I must learn.
Congrats on everyone on a great race. I love these G2 cars and look forward to racing them next season.

My race was good while it lasted.

Started 20th with a bad qual, moved up to around 14th or so, did my first pit and ended up with a Stop N Go, which I promptly hit the ESC key for some stupid reason.

Even though I drove most of that race like an idiot I still had fun. Never seemed to settle down and just get in the groove. Had some great scraps with all the team mates but ended up tap spinning Daniel early in the race and set us both back some spots. I think Garret was involved also (sorry guys)

The Beemer seemed a bit out classed here at Valencia this round although it sure made for some good racing. Unfortunately after a great battle with our newest team mate Daniel at the end of the race things didn't turn out well for him but none the less it was a blast. Qualifyed 6th and ended up in 2nd.

Great job CanAm and congrats to Kent once again on your win.
