The BMW M3 is considered the “typical winner” among the BMW touring cars. In its racing version the 2.3-litre 4-valve 4-cylinder high-performance engine delivers up to 300 bhp. The debut year of the slim-line, robust BMW M3 turns into a march of triumph straight away.
The BMW factory cars with their liveries sporting the well-known racing colours win the three most important titles. Roberto Ravaglia becomes the first World Touring Car Champion, Winfried Vogt European and Eric van de Poele German Champion.
More than 1500 single victories, 60 national championships in street and hillclimb races as well as in rally sport, plus seven European hillclimb championships, five Mitropa Rally Cup wins and eight victories in the 24-hour races at the Nürburgring and at Spa make the BMW M3 the world’s most successful touring car.
