Lotus Elite
Lotus' first true sportscar was the Elite. Colin Chapman's first foray into building a true sportscar for Lotus resulted in an ultra-lightweight, front engine Elite. It featured a fiberglass monocoque, independent suspension and disc brakes at all 4 corners. The engine was a Coventry Climax, putting out a measly 110bhp. Despite it being front engined, the long hood and placement of the driver (almost over the rear axle) mean that it has a rear weight bias. It was soon replaced in '63 by the much more competitive Elan.
Being light weight, it allows for some pretty late braking maneuvers. But due to its low power, don't get too sloppy, as keeping your momentum alive will be key to making sure you don't get eaten alive on even the shortest of straights. - Jerry Chen
