When it first hit the autoshow concept floors in the early 90's, the Viper was an instant hit for Chrysler. With its menacing snake like front fascia, unique clam shell hood, open air roadster design, and a growling V-10, there was no mistaking the Viper for what it was. The road car had a distinctive 5 cylinder engine note from the cockpit, due to the side facing tail pipes just under the driver and passenger doors. The GTS-R racing version dominated sports car racing in the late 90's, with 3 consecutive class wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, FIA championship from 97 thru 99, class and overall champions in '99 ALMS, and a 2000 24 Hour of Daytona title. However, by 2003/2004, the GTS-R had become an aging field filler in GT1.
Despite its age, the Viper's thumping V10 still has the most horsepower and torque of any car in GT1, and in the right hands can be competitive. Tire wear is significant, especially on the rears where all the power is being put down. Power oversteer is very easily achieved in the Viper, and caution must be used when exiting corners. Fuel consumption is light, but the tire wear will dictate your pit strategy. With the right setup, the Viper can be competitive and very fun to drive as you try to rein in the backend as you make your way around the circuit. Note the Force One Viper has slightly more horsepower. - Jerry Chen, Enis Dauti
